Description: Shows the settlement at Bravo Island in Paterson Inlet, with the farm of Dennison Urban ("Yankee") Smith at extreme left, and the house of the Portuguese whaler Manuel Gomez in the centre with three figures in the doorway. There is cleared land in foreground, cows at pasture, a boatshed (to the left of Smith's beached boat - the "Bravo"), a cowshed at the extreme right, a sandspit at the extreme right beside the inlet in the right background. Two clay cliffs on the far bank are reflected in the water. The details listed are taken from John Hall-Jones "Stewart Island explored" 1994 - ATL has at NZ&P 993.1 HAL 1994. Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997. Description: Shows the river winding from background dry hills, towards right foreground, passing limestone? cliff at left middle distance. In immediate foreground is dilapidated wooden bridge, but it is not clear if this bridge crosses the river. This is probably the Waiau River in North Canterbury, as this area was part of Nelson Province in the period 1852-76. Middle distance is occupied by dry grappsy hills, and there are bare mountain peaks beyond these in the distance. Description: View looking south along the bay towards the cliffs dividing Gore Bay from Port Robinson, taking in Mrs Robinson's cottage (the two-storied cottage built for the wife of William "Ready-Money" Robinson), in 1868). Another building, possibly two, can be seen beyond Mrs Robinson's cottage. Description: Shows blockhouse in distance atop a small hill. In the foreground, in front of small cliffs on the shoreline, is a stretch of water, a canoe, and three figures, possibly spear fishing. The title includes "Manukau Hrbour". The Whau River arises north of the Manukau Harbour, and flows into the Waitemata Harbour at Avondale. Nevertheless this view could have been taken from Manukau Harbour looking north to a blockhouse built near the source of the Whau, rather than at its mouth on the Waitemata.
