Description: An album probably created, and chiefly photographed by George William Barltrop, between 1872 (one image of the laying of the foundation stone of (?) Provincial Buildings in 1872), and the rest being views of New Zealand taken in the late 1890s. One sequence of images shows St Thomas' Church (Newtown, Wellington) under construction, and both exterior and interior views when finished, in 1895. One image shows the wreck of the SS Wairarapa in 1894, and there are views of several lighthouses around New Zealand, two of which were taken by the Burton Brothers. A number of scenes are taken in the Nelson area, including several of the Dun Mountain railway (for the Dun Mountain Copper Mining Company), the Maitai River and valley, Nelson City, and Washington Valley. Description: Scene by C D Barraud reproduced on a Christmas card sent out by the law firm Bell Gully Buddle Weir in 1970s. Shows the view from the hills at the southern end of the city, looking northward along the longer axis of the harbour, and was taken towards the close of a fine autumn day when the light of the setting sun was reflected on the distant masses of the Rimutaka and Tararua Ranges. The lower slopes of Brooklyn Hill are in the foreground, with the houses of Te Aro Flat in the middle ground, part of Mt Victoria on the right, ships in the harbour, Somes Island and Petone with the Tararua Ranges beyond in the distance. Description: Shows a distant view of William Fox's homestead, Westoe, on the Rangitikei River flat. A snow-covered Mount Ruapehu is seen in the distance. In the bottom-left foreground is a white-bearded man on a horse, with a small dog; this is possibly Fox himself, though he is not identified. Description: An extensive hilly landscape in the Waikato near Matamata with Firth in the centre by his horse, surrounded by large numbers of Maori. A monument to Tamihana Tarapipipi Te Waharoa is on the right not far from the Wairiri waterfall on the far right. The meeting took place in 1870 The painting was reviewed in the Daily Southern Cross, 8 June 1876, p.3: The artist has faithfully depicted the interview, and the beautiful landscape amidst which it took place. The chief personages, the armed band, Thompson's monument, the distant woods of Matamata and the grand mountain chain, with the magnificent waterfall of Wairiri, and the noble peak of Te Aroha mountain in the distance, are well placed on the canvas, and when finished, promise to complete a picture interesting for its historic facts and scenic beauty'. Exhibited: Auckland Institute and Museum, 1876; Albin Martin (curator, Roger Blackley, Auckland Art Gallery), Auckland Art Gallery, Waikato Museum of Art and History, National Library of New Zealand, and Dunedin Public Art Gallery, 12 August 1988 to 30 April 1989. The next day, Firth met Te Kooti at Tamihana's monument, accompanied by two chiefs and an interpreter.
