Description: The letters describe their life in New Zealand, and include letters describing voyage of the Simlah to Auckland. The majority were written by Hugh, others are by his brothers and sisters and were sent to members of the family remaining in England. They describe the land, people and difficulties they faced in settling in the new colony Hugh Ronald, together with his brother, arrived in New Zealand on the Simlah in 1853. Calender family : Papers relating to passengers on the Bolton

Description: The papers consist of a volume containing transcriptions of letters written by (Eliza?) Hargreaves and (apparently) Sarah Falwasser, passengers on the Bolton, 1839-1840. The letters are addressed to Mrs Calender and Miss C and describe the voyage out and life in Port Nicholson during the first half of 1840 and observations of Maori life and customs. The volume also contains newspapers clippings about Rev J F Churton and his family. Also included is a number of newspaper clippings, a race card from the 1851 Auckland races, Dora Churton's dance card and a copies of letters relating to provenance. Source of title - Supplied title Accompanying material - Accompanied by copies of letters relating to provenance Rev John Frederick Churton was incumbent of the parish of Threapwood at Wrexham immediately prior to his emigration. Eliza Hargreaves and Sarah Falwasser were also from Wrexham. Presumably the Calenders were Wrexham residents who compiled this collection about their emigrant friends. Description: Letters, exchanged between members of the Bracken family in Yorkshire, but mainly from Grace, describe daily life in Taranaki, the outbreak of war in 1860 and its progress, domestic and farm life. Included are detailed accounts of the voyages to New Zealand on the Gwalior, Ravenscraig and Silver Eagle. Thomas and Grace Hirst emigrated to New Zealand from West Riding, Yorkshire on board the Gwalior in 1851 with five of their eight children. They settled in Taranaki, first in New Plymouth where Thomas and Grace traded as general merchants. In 1854 they moved to a small farm at Bell Block, moving back to New Plymouth when marital law was declared in Feb 1860. Thomas & Grace made a visit to England later that year. On the return voyage their ship the William Brown caught fire and was destroyed. Thomas set sail again on the Ravenscraig and Grace returned in 1863 on the Silver Eagle. On the death of Grace's brother in 1870 the family inherited a substantial amount of money which was invested in land etc.. Grace frequently assisted neighbouring families as a midwife and nurse, attended at the birth of many of her own grandchildren, and helped lay out the dead. Description: Reminiscences written in 1910 of Mieville's life in New Zealand, mainly on Glenham Station in the Mataura Valley, Southland, and in Dunedin; transcribed and indexed by Marsha Donaldson. Includes shipboard accounts of the voyage to Port Chalmers on the 'Dominion' in 1851 with the Richardson family, a voyage home to England via Melbourne on the 'Thomas and Henry', and 'Royal Charter' in 1857, and the return voyage to Port Chalmers in 1858 on 'Agra'. He includes some of his wife's diary entries in his reminiscences. His first year in New Zealand was spent at Otepopo on the sheep station owned by Charles Suisted. Crump describes his voyage to New Zealand on the `Kingston' with fellow missionaries Robert Vickers, William Rowse and James Moorhouse. He mentions shipboard events including the collision with an American whaler on 24 Dec 1858, fellow passengers, and his life in Auckland where he lived with the Buddle family at Onehunga. References to Rev Harding, Rev Thomas Buddle and family, Mr Turton, Mr Vercoe, and Three Kings Native Institution. Also includes a letter from Crump to his mother written from Onehunga, 24 Jun 1859.
