It formed the lower portion of the central pillar supporting the roof of Rangihaeata's house on Mana Island, the house being known as Kaitangata. Description: A panoramic view of New Plymouth viewed from the sea, with Gannet and Albatross Islands on the right, the Wai Tera (Waitara) 'originally fixed on for the New Plymouth Settlement", the 'present site of New Plymouth' (before any houses were built) - all on the left side of the panorama. On the right are Mount Egmont, 'Barrett's [Accommodation] Houses and Hotel', 'Native Pah' and the Sugar Loaf Islands 'The islands on which Barrett defeated 5000 natives' In 'Information relating to New Plymouth (London, Smith Elder, 1841). p. 9-10, under 'Climate and soil' 'Mr G. Duppa states:- 'Amongst other sketches, I have sent you a panoramic view of the Sugar Loaves, Mount Egmont, and the Taranaki district generally, which I made when I went down there in the Brougham, with the Plymouth Company's surveyors. It will give you a better idea of the country than any verbal description I could give, beyond a few observations. The land for about three miles inland is slightly undulating, but not so steep but that a plough would go over the whole of it ... It is for the most part covered with fern and brushwood (which fire levels with the ground) for several miles inland, when you first meet with groves of timber, present a most park-like aspect ...' Description: Diagrammatic map drawn on higher ground overlooking the scene where the HMS Buffalo navy ship was wrecked ('28th July 1840, at 10 am'). Map shows the site was wrecked, in a flat, sandy beach area, the thickly wooded hills behind it, the encampment of those who were in the wrecked ship, points on the beach where parts of the ship were washed ashore, and an area of flat marshy ground. Also depicted is the neighbouring pa site (maori village) of the Chief Teraroa, ('Teraroa's hippah'), the encampment of the part of the Buffalo's crew 'who were employed in the firest, preparing the cargo, Mercury River, part of Wiritianga's pa site, as well as Mr Brown's wharf-store and settlement ('Buffalo's store's were landed there'). Signature of creator on map but hard to distinguish. Appears to be ?T. Laslett. Shows several drawings of trees, buildings at Brown's settlement, navy tents. Description: Topographic map of the southern half of the North Island, with especial emphasis on the Wairarapa valley, showing natural features and stands of timber; the Maori names for some of these features are given, together with names and locations of some pa . Includes the surveyors' route which began on 1st. June, ca. 1848, from a site along the Manawatu River to the Ruamahanga River, Lake Wairarapa, ending at the Hutt River on 20 June. Description: Gisborne and Petre went by sea to Coromandel and then by land, first up to Thames and travelling up the river, passing through pa, including Opita, then to Matamata, Tauranga, Rotorua, Lake Tarawera and Lake Rotomahana. They returned to Auckland by way of the Waikato River, passing through Maungatautari and Waipa. The journal includes interesting descriptions of Maori life and Gisborne meet the Revs Brown, Spencer, Chapman and Ashville [sic] and various prominent Maori. Description: Pirongia Mountain in the left background and the volcanic cone of Kakepuku to the right. A line of trees in the middle distance, flax and low scrub in the foreground, with part of the fenceline of Rarowera Pā on the right (also known as Raroera Pā). Rarowera Pa was on what is now Wallace Terrace, about a mile from the centre of modern Te Awamutu Other Titles - Pirongia Kakepuku There is a similar drawing by Merrett in the Grey Album, British Library, Add. Description: View north across the harbour from Thorndon, just to the left of Pipitea Pa, with the palisades of the pa on the right, a ravine and three Maori to the left of the ravine. Kaiwharawhara with the hotel is visible on the extreme left, with the Western hills leading to the Tararuas, and the Hutt Valley in the distance. The view may possibly be further along Thorndon Beach from the Pa. There was a ravine where the motorway now runs, crossed by the Hobson Street Bridge in later years, and this may be the area shown, in central Thorndon. Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: An inlet in the Marlborough Sounds, with two wading birds, possibly shags, in the foreground, a small canoe with occupants by a rocky outcrop in the middle ground, bush and the palisades of a pa to the right. High hills in the background. In one of George Duppa's sketchbooks. Fox and Duppa were in a farming partnership while Fox was living in Nelson between 1843 and 1848. In addition, Fox is know to have spent March 1845 exploring the country north of the Wairau River. One of the watercolours by Fox in the Hocken Library is entitled Melville Cove. S. side of Cook's Straits. 1845. It is a view from a higher standpoint looking down on the bay, with Maori whare close to the shore among trees, and two Maori canoes on the water. The date on the Hocken watercolour is the basis for the date ascribed to the Turnbull's drawing Inscriptions: Recto - bottom centre - Title. W. Fx Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Description: Interior view of Kawiti's Pa at Ruapekapeka includes his house and pallisade, and several unnamed houses. Two wells are labelled, while the ditches, embankments and gateways are not. A reference key identifies the areas destroyed by artillery as well as the positions of the flagstaff. Four diagrams surround the plan: elevation of palisades; bomb proof hole; section of a hut and an underground passage and cave. A larger diagram shows a cross-section view of the pa showing the position of the breach and underground bomb proof chambers. Compare to lithograph held in Drawings and Prints E-320-f-003 and MapColl-832.11hkm/1846/Acc.29011. Map has manuscript annotations. On the rear of the map is handwritten "Captured under Sir George Grey Govenor, January 11th 1846, 12 English killed and 30 wounded.
