Description: Shows Maori launching a canoe; a horse and cart are on the road to the right, at the base of a cliff Title taken from handwritten slip on back; compare with slip on back of B-030/002. Both slips removed in the course of conservation and no longer present. There is a faint pencil drawing of a bush scene on the verso. The backing of the work has been partially removed and the drawing is hard to see. This work was attributed by the Library to Cuthbert Clarke until 2008. However Clarke is not known to have visited the Wellington region and the style appears closer to that of R. A. Oliver, who was based in Wellington and visited the Hutt Valley on more than one occasion. One watercolour of the Hutt by Oliver is dated March 1848, another September 30th, with no year. Compare the articulation of the figure dragging the canoe at the right, with a figure in the same position, dragging a canoe at Wahapu, Bay of Islands, in Oliver's watercolour at C-001-011 Other Titles - Clarke, Cuthbert Charles, 1819-1863. 1848-1851 Inscriptions: Recto - 'Title taken from handwritten slip on back; compare with slip on back of B-030-002' according to catalogue card. Neither hand-written slip has been retained. The wording of the title suggests a later attribution, not the artist's own title. Description: View from the first ridge above the beach showing a prefabricated barracks to the left and the tents erected to house the first settlers to Nelson, a well, a flag, and several carts. The view looks from the land towards the Boulder Bank and Haulashore Island, and the Arrow or Fifeshire rock across Tasman Bay to the distant snow-capped Moutere Hills and Tasman Range. The first three immigrant ships, The Will Watch, the Whitby and the Arrow are shown in the harbour with flags flying. There are clumps of trees at the water's edge, but the land is otherwise grassed or with flax and bracken. Original watercolour for the related lithograph "View of Nelson Haven in Tasman's Gulf, New Zealand, including a part of the site of the Town of Nelson" published in 1842. Description: Shows a view looking towards open water between a low tongue of land at the left, and the higher landing place at the right, with six boats drawn up by the bank and three others in the water. Above the landing place men work unloading and carrying, and a horse and cart is employed. Behind this are a group of buildings, one with a flag flying from its roof. There is a steamboat in the left distance in open water. Title taken from item. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Shortland landing place from inside the Creek Auckland Museum holds a similar sketch of the same location called "The creek and landing place, Shortland. Description: A naive watercolour of the Deans brothers' farmhouse and outbuildings, viewed from across the "Avon or Shakspear River", with horses, cows and sheep in the foreground, a log bridge, a man (presumably one of the Deans brothers) with a dog under a tree. The house is red, with a second storey with dormer window, a rain barrel below the downpipe from the roof. The outbuildings to the right of the house appear to be thatched stables, are open at the front and shelter a horse and three carts. Trees are roughly indicated behind the house. On the verso are holograph notes about Banks' Peninsula, copied from Duppa, Daniels [?] and Tyrell and from Captain [William Mein] Smith about Port Cooper (Lyttelton) and its merits for settlement versus those of Akaroa. Dating: William Deans was drowned in 1851, a fact that is not mentioned here, suggesting, along with the general tone of the notes, that this drawing may have been completed before then, although the two-storied building on the site was not completed until 1856. Other material from the same source was produced about 1850 or 1851. William Mein Smith's report was completed about 1843. The page has been removed from a notebook. The author of the notes (and artist) appears to be somebody associated with the Canterbury Association. The first two-storied house at Deans' property was built in 1856, when Jane Deans built a larger house on the site in preparation for the arrival of her brother and his family. The house shown here may be the 1856 north-east section, the earliest part of modern Riccarton House. Other sections were added in 1874 and 1900, resulting in a much larger building. One possible artist is John Henry Cridland, whose other drawings from the same source are quite naive. However another drawing by him of the Deans' property (neg MNZ 1215 1/4 - 'Riccarton, November 1850' - Hocken Library) is very different in style from this one. Identification: The building shown appears to be a roughly-drawn version of the first two-storied house on the site, completed in 1856. Other drawings of the same building appear as Plate 5 and Plate 14 (the latter by Robert Park) in Pioneers on Port Cooper Plains. The Deans family of Riccarton and Homebush by John Deans (Christchurch, 1964). Description: Shows a coach and four about to cross a bridge over Ngauranga stream in the foreground. The Hutt Road is visible to the right. Three buildings, including Futter's Tavern in the background. There is a half-canoe monument to Te Wharepouri, upright in the ground beyond the buildings and below the hills Quite possibly a copy of an earlier work by another artist. Other known historical paintings by Rollason appear to be copied. He was known to be painting around 1900. See 'Ngauranga, late 1840s' negative 19460 1/2 for a possible original for Rollason's painting. The artist for 'Ngauranga, late 1840s' is unknown and the photographic print was among collection items held by Anthony Murray-Oliver, with no accompanying documentation. It seems likely that the painting was lent for copying in the 1960s. One extra detail in 'Ngauranga, late 1840s' is a cross on top of the hill closest to the sea; however, it lacks the additional cart and horse on the far side of the stream. The painting includes a view of Futter's Tavern. See also Brees, S.C. Description: Two cottages enclosed within fenced gardens, with Nelson Haven and ships visible to the right and a road to the left, with families and a horse and cart passing along it. Maplestone is not known to have visited New Zealand and despite the date of 1849 almost certainly copied this image from the lithograph published in C. F. Hursthouse's 'New Zealand, or Zealandia, the Britain of the South' (London, Stanford, 1857), p. 122 - see copy held at A-256-014. The 1849 date is likely reflect the stage to which Nelson was developed, rather than the date of execution. A lithograph presented with Brett's Almanac for 1890, which is derived from an earlier lithograph published by Samuel Augustus Tegg in 1845, (with title The New-Zealand festival), which in turn is after an original watercolour of the event made in 1844 by J. J. Merrett in the Hocken Library, Dunedin. Words below the image read: The Maori feast depicted in this picture was one of then largest ever held in New Zealand. It was given by the Waikato chiefs. The site chosen was in the vicinity of Mt Hobson, at Remuera, near Auckland. About four thousand natives were present. A shed 400 yards long had been erected and was covered with blankets; and tents decorated with little flags, dotted the ground. The provisions comprised 11,000 baskets of potatoes, 9,000 sharks, 100 pigs, and large quantities of tea, tobacco, and sugar. A thousand blankets had been provided as presents. Governor Fitzroy, with his suite, visited the meeting on the 11th May 1844, when 1,600 natives, armed with guns and tomahawks, danced the wardance. The assembling of so large a force near the infant capital caused some uneasiness among the settlers, but admirable order was maintained throughout. The various tribes were accompanied by their missionaries, and religious services were well attended. The feast lasted about a week. Description: View looking down Princes Street towards Emily Place, with St Paul's church at the foot of the street, the harbour beyond. The long low house to the right of the church would have been that of Brigade-Major Joseph Greenwood. To the extreme left, the original Wood's Royal Hotel can be seen, with its verandah partly enclosed with lattice. The two-storey building next door to it is the Royal Masonic Hotel, and beside that, the Union Bank of Australia. Various men, women and children are standing or sitting in the street, and a carriage drawn by two horses, carrying four people, rides up the street According to Una Platts' 'The lively capital: Auckland 1840-1865', the image is given the title 'Princes Street, Auckland, 1849, with Colonel Wynyard's carriage'; this title does not appear on the original and may come from family knowledge Wynyard made two versions of the scene; the other is privately owned. Description: Shows a view from inside a fence with a cart or plough on the near side of it, looking west northwest from the position of the Purewa Cemetery towards the Orakei Peninsula, the Orakei Basin and in the distance the hill of Parnell with a church (St Pauls' with the spire completed) on top of it. There are two small sailing ships (Selwyn's 'Flying Fish' and 'Marian' and a yacht off the Orakei point, and a group of huts ("Okahu N. Village") at the far right above the stream that flows into the Basin. St Paul's Church was built in 1843 but did not acquire the spire seen in this picture until a year or two later.
