Description: Comprises the personal papers of John Richardson Selwyn, formerly Bishop of Melanesia and Warden of Selwyn College, Cambridge, and those of his parents, George Augustus and Sarah Harriet Selwyn. They include correspondence, diaries, reminiscences and other paper. As well there are some official Church records. Source of title - Supplied by Library Arrangement: A numbering system of the letters and documents, divided into rough series and using a reference SEL010/[series number]/[number of item] was used prior to the purchase of the papers. We have added these references to the titles where appropriate. However large numbers of the papers were never listed under this system. The papers have been placed into three series, according to their origin with George Augustus, Sarah Harriet and John Richardson Selwyn. Description: Describes decision of father, Seymour Mills, to become a missionary, tracing his progress from the United States to England, then to New Zealand with Bishop Selwyn in 1842. Describes Maori life near the mission station at Kariri near Lake Tarawera, and the wars of the 1860s. Joined the army in the 1870s; later studied for the ministry under Bishop Suter in Nelson. Description: Chiefly family letters from William Bolland, first minister at New Plymouth, 1843-1847; and from his wife Jane, after his death. Also two letters from Bishop Selwyn, and one from John Morgan, Wanganui to Rev W E Bolland, Norfolk, England, dated 1910 Included are three letters by William Bolland to his mother Sarah Bolland. In two of them William describes his happiness at having married Jane Wright. They were married in 1841, and sailed for Taranaki the same year. In three letters written by Jane from New Zealand she describes their arrival, life as a clergyman's wife, her home, and nursing her son through an illness. Describes negotiations with Hone Heke, evacuating Pakeha, and the American trading post, from Kororareka, and his role in the blockade. Includes two letters to the Secretary of the US Navy on the events in the Bay of Islands; correspondence with Bishop Pompallier, Fitzroy, Bishop Selwyn, Magistrate Beckham, the commanders of HMS Hazard and North Star, US Consul in Sydney, and in 1851, letter from Rev A N Brown.
