Description: Half-length portraits of a Maori man and a woman Trimmed inside plate marks. The original drawing by Piron was of two men, since only men came out to D'Entrecasteau's ship when it visited New Zealand waters in 1793. Later engravers turned the right-hand figure into a woman 2nd state. (The first state, published 1806, lacks the imprint P. Jackson, London). Extended Title - From Cavendish, Pelham. Painting of Ranginui, a New Zealander from Doubtless Bay, ca 1769-1770. Shown holding a mere in his right hand. His face, hip and thigh are tattooed as well as his calves. Description: Shows full-face head and shoulders portrait of a Maori chief with moko, short curly hair, a turkey feather over his right ear, ear ornaments and a feather cloak. The chief's name was Te Uri Kanae Attribution based on the fact that an engraving was made of this work in 1824, and Lewin is acknowledged as artist ("Lewin del."). A copy of the engraving is held at A-092-002 According to Ellis' "Early prints of New Zealand" (Christchurch, 1978), A Hoodee O Gunna [Turi a Kuna] was a signatory to the first sale of land in New Zealand, to the Church Missionary Society in February 1815. Dating has been made on the basis of this. The subject is a chief of Rangihoua and nephew of Te Pahi. Lewin is said to have made his sketch of this subject in Sydney; there is no evidence for Lewin having visited New Zealand. Other Titles - Te Uri o Kanae Turi a Kuna Rangihoua Inscriptions: None. Description: Samuel Marsden behind a makeshift pulpit, with the Bible, preaching to a group of Maori and Europeans, with a bay behind him on the left, with canoes and a European ship (the Active), and on the right Rangihoua, a hilltop pa. The Maori chief Ruatara is standing in uniform to the right of Marsden and in the left foreground is Korokoro, dressed in the regimental uniform given him by Governor Maquarie of New South Wales. This reconstruction was painted to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the 1st Christian sermon in New Zealand, and was commissioned to be published in the Weekly News, Auckland, December 16th 1964 Quantity: 1 colour photo-mechanical print(s).
