Description: View of the White Terraces seen across Lake Rotomahana. Te Tarata was the Maori name for the White Terraces, destroyed by the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886. Most of the artist's other etchings in this series were dated either 1887 or 1888, but he may have produced this etching after the destruction of the Terraces from earlier drawings Other Titles - White Terraces Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Te Tarata, Rotomahana.; Recto - bottom right - P.; Verso - The White Terraces, destroyed by a volcano. Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s). Physical Description: Etching 90 x 127 mm Provenance: Purchased 1890 by Alexander Horsburgh Turnbull from the artist. With other Payton etchings, was among the earliest purchase of art works by Turnbull for his collection.
