Description: Shows Ensign Best (or Ernst Dieffenbach) on left with cap, Captain Symonds in cape. Te Waru's daughter is being denounced for murder. Te Waru is standing against a background of a carved memorial, holding his daughter by her arm. Other Maori men and women are seated in a group around Te Waru and his daughter. There is a pataka (storehouse) to the left and a gourd is being emptied onto a fire on the far right. Engraving by Whitby, after a sketch by J.J. Merrett. Derived from a sketch by J.J. Merrett, made on a trip with Best, Symonds & Dieffenbach, 1841. Provenance: Previously owned by the Tomlinson family, and lent by them to the Missionary Loan Exhibition.
