Description: Shows two coaches and a cart stationed outside hotel at Bealey, West Coast Road, Canterbury. The road continues into the distance on the right, with distant glimpses of the Bealey or Waimakariri river and the Southern Alps. Published in :"Le Tour du monde: nouveau journal des voyages". Paris: M.E. Charton, 1860-1894. 61 volumes. "Voyage a la Nouvelle Zelande" verso of p. 232, volume unknown, 1890? On verso of Region alpestre / dessin de P. Langlois... (A-109-064) Image also reproduced in "New Zealand graphic" vol. 6, no. 42, 18 October 1890, page 3, and acknowleged as based on a Burton Brothers photo. The copy negative for the N. Z. Graphic version is MNZ-0696. It contains fewer details than the French version, with fewer people, no covered waggon in the background, but with the word BAR spelled out on the top three panes of the window to the right of the nearer door. An oil by Charles Blomfield 'Bealey accommodation house ... 1891' on sale at the International Art Centre, 15 Oct 1999, lot 101, shows the hotel with a red roof and some red, some cream walls, possibly indicating some corrugated iron, some wood in the construction.
