The Pa is Rangihaeata's Matai Taua Pa Copy of pencil drawing (115 x 185 mm) copied by Mary Marshall from original by W. Swainson. Matai Taua Pa, built ca 1845, was abandoned by Rangihaeata in 1846 when he withdrew with his men to Battle Hill to face British soldiers. Jenkins' was the first European building at Waikanae, owned by William Jenkins. Backing board (accompanying) has clipping about William Jenkins from a published source. Description: View through wind-shaped trees from the northwest side of Petone Flat, looking towards the eastern hills. On the right is the palisade of Te Puni's pa with the roof of one whare rising above the fence-line and a single high-roofed house on the plain further into the valley on the left. There is a lone male figure, carrying a long spear standing in the middle ground, between two trees. A very similar drawing reproduced in Louis Ward's "Early Wellington" (Plate 25) is titled "Te Puni's new pa (Te Tatau-o-te-po) behind the Pito-one Pa" and shows the pa as close to the beach Other Titles - Pa of Honiana Te Puni, Petone, Te Tatau o te Po Inscriptions: Backing board recto - beneath image - Title and date Quantity: 1 drawing(s).
