Description: A hut in a clearing with the river in the background, trees nearby Title and date from back: probably added at later date possibly by Edith Swainson Artist's monogram matches that of William Swainson; however the style is not typical of his work. He did not commonly use ink and wash; nor is he known to have visited Manawatu, where his daughter Edith lived. He may have redrawn or drawn over and initialled a drawing of hers. Description: A clearing in bush, with a single-storey bark hut on a rock or clay bank beside a small stream. A tall mamaku (tree fern) is in front of the hut, with a seated and a standing Maori figure. Other tree ferns and bush are beyond, with hills. A raupo is in the foreground beside the stream. The scene is likely to be at the foot of the western or eastern hills in the Hutt Valley.
