Description: Shows a bush clearing with tall trees at left and right, beside a thatched cottage whose roof extends on the left side almost to the ground. There is a slab chiney on the near side, and to the right a woman stands beside a barrel. There is another low thatched hut at the left. In the left foreground lies a tree trunk. There is a solitary tree fern behind the house. Louis E Ward's "Early Wellington" (1928) notes on page 300, that a Mr Russell (spelt with a double l) was living at Taita in 1852 (quotes the 'Australian and New Zealand gazette' for 12 June 1852). A road runs to the right and a group of four people stands in the distance William Barnard Rhodes was involved with the purchase of lands in Waikanae, Porirua and Wellington from the Te Ati Awa and Ngati Toa tribes. Many of these purchases were later disputed by the tribes concerned. Rhodes had also invested heavily in trading and whaling operations in the Kapiti and Wellington districts as well as Northland. Description: A hut in a clearing with the river in the background, trees nearby Title and date from back: probably added at later date possibly by Edith Swainson Artist's monogram matches that of William Swainson; however the style is not typical of his work. He did not commonly use ink and wash; nor is he known to have visited Manawatu, where his daughter Edith lived. He may have redrawn or drawn over and initialled a drawing of hers. Description: A copy, with some variations of a lithograph from an original drawing by William Swainson 'Fern-Tree', lithographed by Cuthbert Clarke at St John's College, Auckland in 1849. Both versions show the central tree-fern with its dead branches hanging around the trunk, a standing (armed with a spear) Maori male and a seated Maori woman to the left of the trunk and low scrub beyond. White's watercolour has the addition of another Maori male walking off into the bushes to the right of the trunk of the tree-fern. It is possible that White copied Swainson's drawing, rather than Clarke's lithograph version of this view. See A-004-007 for a copy of the lithograph, which is very rare, and in which Clarke has accidentally reversed the Ns in Swainson's name, and almost in the title, although that is corrected. See also White's 'Black tree-fern' (A-292-073), which tends to suggest that White was copying Swainson's drawing, rather than the lithograph, because it is not reversed, like the lithograph. However the fact that both of Swainson's drawings that he is known to have copied were lithographed by Clarke in Auckland, may suggest that White saw the drawings in Auckland. T. B. Collinson, amongst whose sketches the watercolours by Fred White are located, visited St John's College and White, a fellow member of the Royal Marines, may have visited with him and seen the Swainson drawings there..
