[Angas, George French] 1822-1886 :Outer chamber of the largest limestone cavern near Po...
Date: 1844
From: [Angas, George French] 1822-1886 :[Sketchbook 1844]
Reference: A-020-039
Description: The interior of a limestone cave, with stalagmites and stalactites, its size given scale by the presence of two seated Maori figures in the background. The caves shown may be in the vicinity of the Waitomo Caves, near where Angas was located on 18 October 1844. The name Poukumapou is no longer in use, but may refer to Pukemapou, some distance northeast of Waitomo. Angas in his journal and in Savage life and scenes (published 1847) refers to fording the Waipa and reaching Paripari (Parapara?) on 18 October, both some kilometres north-east of the Waitomo Caves. The suggestion that the caves shown are in fact the Waitomo Caves, is possibly incorrect in that these caves were officially "discovered" as late as 1887 by Tane Tinorou and Fred Mace. 'Mr Lewis' is almost certainly Louis Hetet, a French settler, sometimes spelled Lewis Hetet, mentioned frequently by Angas in his journal. Other Titles - Te Paripari Parapara, Pukemapou. Title from back Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour 320 x 254 mm
