By: Morris, John Richard, 1854-1919

Reference: PAColl-D-1441

Description: Photograph of a suspension bridge over the Clutha River at Roxburgh, with the town and surrounding landscape in the background, taken by John Richard Morris ca 1887-1890. A pony and trap with rider is visible on the bridge and the older bridge can be seen upstream. The depicted Roxburgh suspension bridge opened in May 1887 and was in use until March 1974. The earlier wooden bridge had been washed away by flooding in 1878. Source: Heritage New Zealand. This print appears to have been made using an enlarger so will likely date from later than 1887. This also means it is unlikely to have been the print originally displayed at the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Inscriptions: Verso - bottom left - Morris Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s) on hardboard mount. Physical Description: Enlarged silver gelatin print with visible baryta layer 45 x 61cm, hardboard mount 53 x 68cm Provenance: The photograph was taken for the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition 1889-1890. This print was given to Thomas S Grover, Mayor of Roxburgh 1888-1890. It was held by the Grover family until it was deposited with the Library.

Reference: PA1-f-038

Description: Scenic photographs, chiefly of South Island lakes and mountains, taken by John Richard Morris (Jnr); and three photographs of Rio de Janiero taken by Brazilian photographer Marc Ferrez. Photographs by J R Morris include two of seabirds, both of which show snare's crested penguins, one showing a variety of seabirds, stated to be at the Bounty Islands. Most of the images by Morris are purely landscapes, but there is one view of a large group of children paddling at St Clair Beach, Dunedin; one of a young man standing in front of Beech Hut, with Mount Balloon in the background; one of a man standing by a dinghy with a sail at Boat Cove, Lake Te Anau; one of a man standing beneath Hawke's Crag in the Buller Gorge; and one of Fern Arch in the Buller Gorge. The three views by Marc Ferrez are entitled "Pont de Sylvestre" (the Viaduto do Silvestre da Estrada de Ferro do Corcovado) leading up to Mount Corcovado; "Sommet de Corcovado", "Promenade de l'aqueduc".
