Description: Red-coated soldiers (probably from the 58th Regiment) in the foreground, groups of Maori men and women, canoes drawn up on the shore of the Hutt River, the palisades of the pa in the background, with tall trees beyond. Several Maori are carrying bundles on their backs, possibly of potatoes, since Brees mentions 'extensive potato grounds' around the pa in his text on p.30 of Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand The date of the original is likely to be 1845, since the soldiers shown did not occupy the Hutt Valley until 1845. The pa was located on the east bank of the river close to the site of the present Melling Bridge. Brees mentions that Makaenuku Pa was built by Porirua Maori after 1840. Other Titles - Makahinuku Pa Extended Title - In: Brees S C Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand Plate 18, No 54; also reproduced in Brees' Guide and description of the panorama of New Zealand (London, 1849) See also at E-070-007 (digitised). Date: 1842 - 1847 - 1845

From: [Brees, Samuel Charles] 1810-1865 :Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand. Plate 3. Lowry Bay District & Road, 6; The Aglionby Arms (Burcham's) River Hutt, 7; Porerua Bay, 8. Engraved by Henry Melville; drawn by S C Brees. [1847]

By: Brees, Samuel Charles, 1810?-1865; Melville, Henry, 1792-1870

Reference: A-109-023

Description: Shows path into hills with apparently land-locked water in the background. From: Brees, S C. Pictorial illustrations of New Zealand, no 6 Plate 3, published London 1847 Brees in his text to "Pictorial Illustrations" notes: "This is a district adjoining Port Nicholson consisting principally of swamp and fern ... There are two mountain streams connected with this district, the Wai-nui-o-mate and the Oronga-ronga ... A road will be carried over this way to the Waira-rapa,some day as a cross line to Palliser Bay". This tect suggests that the 1840s definition of the extent of Lowry Bay was much larger than the present and included the Wainuiomata and Orongorongo Valleys. The image does not resemble the topography of the present Lowry Bay area, but the expanse of water is too great for the area shown to be Wainuiomata or Orongorongo Quantity: 1 colour art print(s). Physical Description: Engraving, hand-coloured 73 x 128 mm

Brees' text on page 22 of Pictorial Illustrations gives considerable details about the plan and cost of the fort. Inscriptions: Backing board recto - Opened 1844.
