Description: Shows a distant view of the town from the far bank of the Whanganui River. York and Rutland Stockades can be seen on the hills at the left, with the spire of Christ Church beyond the houses below. Shakespeare Bluff is across the river to the right. The peak of Mt Ruapehu rises in the distance Title appears to have been added at a later date. Description: Shows two soldiers in the foreground, with undulating hills and the barracks in the distance on the skyline [known as Gore Browne Barracks or Napier Barracks]. The painting was attributed to C. D. Barraud on acquisition. Reattributed in 1992 on stylistic grounds. In addition, the donor was descended from Frances Tanner's sister. Other Titles - Barraud Charles Decimus Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 7.3 x 10.6 ins Provenance: It had been handed down to Miss Acland from her grandfather, who was Canon St Hill of Napier. The donor's great-aunt was Frances Tanner.
