Date: 1865
By: Rhodes, Joseph, 1826-1905; Rhodes, Beatrice, active 1978
Reference: A-159-032
Description: Shows the remains of Wairenga-a-Hika Pa with Bishop Williams of Waiapu's two-storied house in the distance. The pa ruins are mostly the larger palisades and some fencing. There is a barrel on the ground to the left and a short, thick, possibly cut off pole in the foreground The drawing bears a close resemblance to a photograph 'Remains of the pa at Warengaahika, after its capture and destruction in 1865', reference number 1/2-008137-F in the Rhodes Album (PA-1-q-193, p. 90). There are some slight differences between the two images. Rhodes, a farmer in Hawkes Bay, may have visited Waerengaahika himself and stood in the same spot as the photographer; he may have copied the photograph; or he may have been the photographer. Other Titles - Waerenga-a-hika Pa Waerengaahika Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Warangahika Pah ruins with Hau Hau pole / in foreground and Bishops House in rear / Te Kooti and 200 prisoners here. / Poverty Bay war / 1865.
