[Park, Robert] 1812-1870 :[Military encampment, Napier. 1858 or 1859]

Description: Shows a view looking down to a hollow area between hills, with raupo huts and tents collected in and around the hollow. Soldiers in red jackets stand around in small groups. There are walking tracks going up the background slopes, and a fence has been made going up the hill on the left. This painting is not titled by the artist, and bears a strong resemblance to another watercolour by Park, entitled in pencil at lower right "Napier". Both works are shown (on pages 74 and 76) of Nola Easdale's "Kairuri; the measurer of the land" (1988), held at NZ&P q526.9 EAS 1988. Randal Springer, Wanganui historian, (AT 13/14/1, 30 April 1997) said that there was no military encampment "near Wanganui" in 1847; it was all in Wanganui itself, at the Rutland and York stockades. The topography is also wrong for Wanganui. The evidence suggests that the view is of Napier in the late 1850s, rather than of Wanganui. It is not known whether the title was assigned by Library staff or by the donor Dating: likely to date from the 1858 or 1859, when the 65th Regiment was in Hawkes Bay and Park was working with Donald McLean Other Titles - Military encampment, Wanganui, 1847 [attributed title on donation] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour 250 x 355 mm Provenance: Donation: William Deans, Knockdolian, Darfield, 17.2.76.

Description: View from the west bank of the Hutt River, looking across to the east with a bridge on the left, several houses and a church amongst trees. Possibly the earliest view of the beginnings of Lower Hutt. Inscription on mount: 'The first lithograph executed in Wellington in the year 1842. By Robt. Park, Surveyor to the N.Z.L.Co. ex S. D. Parnell'. The assertion about this being the first lithograph executed in Wellington is not correct. Jones and Bluett lithographed a Chart of Port Nicholson by E M Chaffers in May 1841, followed by other maps in August 1841. They also lithographed W M Smith's view Lambton Harbour and Mount Victoria in June 1841. See The first New Zealand lithographs by R P Hargreaves in Art New Zealand, 24, Winter 1982, p. 50-51 Richmond is said to have been the particular part of the Hutt district where Mr Parnell first asserted the Eight Hours Principle. Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s). Physical Description: Lithograph, 200 x 249 mm Provenance: Purchased by T.E. Donne at the sale of S.D. Parnell's effects, Wellington 1891.

Description: Shows, from left to right: Hine Paketia, Puhara, Alice Kranama, Te Uri He Kahekakariki, Hine Rangia, and Patuware. The group were all members of the Ngati Kahungugnu tribe. The women on the left was Queen Hineipatekia, sister of Te Hapuku. She was mentioned as "our Queen" in Te Hapuku's 1851 letter to Governor Grey disputing the price offered by the Crown for the land. His "favourite wife of 13 wives, Hine Rangia" is second from the right and his daughter is on the far right. Te Hapuku (Te Ika Nui o te Moana, paramount chief of the Ahuriri/Napier area) was responsible for selling the tribe's land to the Crown. This led to intertribal warfare for many years. Figures drawn on separate sheets and pasted on to background. Descriptive note signed: R. Park. Some Maori names spelt incorrectly. Note on back. A very similar watercolour is in the Rex Nan Kivell Collection, National Library of Australia. It is titled Natives of Ahuriri (Hawkes Bay) alive in 1851 and is signed by Robert Park Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - title and names and roles of the subjects, in ink. The notes were added later than the drawing was made, since they include death dates after 1851 for a number of the subjects Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
