Description: Comprises Union Bank of Australia cheque book half-used, belonging to the Land Purchase Department. The used counterfoils give names and dates of persons paid. With the book are endorsements in ink for Te Pakeru (or Te Pakaui), chief at Kawhia and described as friendly to Europeans. It is dated 14 May 1845, the place given as Manaia, Taranaki and is signed by McLean. It also contains faint pencil, mainly illegible. Also, large sheet of paper with pencilled notes, apparently of a meeting held at Taupo during May (1862?)

This was a period when the colonial settlers at Wellington thought themselves to be under imminent attack by Ngati Toa and others.
