Description: Album with reproductions of paintings and lithographs of varying subjects, including religious themes and pictures of animals. These pictures are interspersed with photographs, including views of Turkey, Greece, Ireland, and New Zealand. Views in New Zealand are chiefly in Wellington, with some in Taranaki. Several images show views in Cuba Street, Wellington, including the business premises of Gordon Baillie, photographer, with the cottage of Mr Gregg next door; also the Nags Head Hotel, looking towards Wellington Harbour. Description: Recent prints from old photographs of Wellington, originallty taken between about 1841 and 1929. Includes one photograph of a painting of Wellington waterfront from 1841, by Charles Heaphy. Only a few images identify the photographers, the Burton Brothers, Tyree Brothers and James Bragge. The Bragge photograph (looking down to the Harbour from Hill Street taken in the 1880s) was identified from his horse-drawn carriage with his name and occupation emblazoned on the side. Description: Photograph album of images taken by various photographers (identified below). Chiefly scenic views of New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, and United States of America. Also eight images of Fijian and Samoan persons. Album compiled by Archibald Young ca 1888. - Album features photographs of New Zealand, including Auckland, Napier, Wellington, Gisborne, Port Lyttelton, Port Chalmers, Hutt Valley and river, Waitakere Falls, Oamaru, Queenstown, Waikato River at Ateamure [sic], Mt Earnslaw and Lake Wakatipu, Milford Sound, Lake Manapouri, Ohinemutu, Lake Rotorua and Mokoia, and Wairakei. Also includes series of George Dobson Valentine images relating to the eruption of Mount Tarawera (before and after), including the Pink and White Terraces, Tikitapu Bush, Lake Rotomahana, Echo Lake and rent in the side of the mountain. Album also contains images relating to Maori, including King Tawhiao but also unidentified group images, meeting houses, various carved object, and dried heads. - Images from Australia feature: Cape Raoul, Mount Wellington and other Tasmanian scenes; Melbourne city scenes, including 1888 Exhibition building, Scots Church, Federal Coffee Palace, Princess Theatre, and Bourke Street; Ballarat; Garden Gully Goldmine; Sandhurst, including the School of Mines and Industry and the Shamrock Hotel; Blue Mountains, New South Wales, with Katoomba Falls, Govett's Leap, Weeping Rock, and Jenolan Caves featured; and a panorama of Sydney, including the harbour. - Photographs from the Republic of Hawaii feature Diamond Head, King's Palace and Princess Ruth's Palace, Coconut grove at Waikiki, Hawaiian Hotel, E C Hall's residence, gardens at Queen Hospital, and various dance groups. Description: Photographic album created by Joseph Foxley Norris, with many images of places visited in Great Britain, including castles, cathedrals, stately homes, ports, landscapes, and bridges. Joseph Foxley Norris was a founding member of the Cyclists' Touring Club in England, and was a member of the Pickwick Bicycle Club in England with one image being a group portrait of members of the club. A number of the English scenes were photographed by G.W.W. (George Washington Wilson). Other regions visited include Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro. Views of New Zealand are mostly in the South Island, with a few of Wellington (including Government Buildings, Parliament Buildings and Government House). One photograph taken by James Bragge shows a group of unidentified Maori standing outside a meeting house in Masterton. South Island views include a bicycle "meet" in Christchurch, with a large crowd gathered, and a number of penny-farthing bicycles visible. A number of images show men riding penny-farthing bicycles and the dangers of so doing, with posed views of two men underneath their bicycles and one clutching a fence, taken in and around Christchurch. On page 108 is hand-printed award `Anniversary Sports, Christchurch,N.Z. 16th December 1880. The following ten views taken from the Cathedral Tower, Christchurch, are the 3rd prize in the One Mile Champion Bicycle Race won by J. Foxley Norris, Pioneer Bicycle Club'. Other views include a group of about four men touring along the West Coast Road, and notable buildings in Christchurch and Dunedin. One image shows the "cage" crossing the Teremakau River. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903.
