Description: Corliss has not kept a daily diary but rather an occasional journal describing special occasions such as a family holiday to Picton, a train trip from Petone to Wellington, aspects of her teaching career, lists of stories she had written, her musical interests, and a voyage to England on the `Ayrshire' in 1914, where she studied music. Included with the volume is a copy of a letter from George H Valentine to his brother (from Lefevers Peninsula, Port Adelaide, 7 Sep 1859), and notes re the `Annie Wilson' which arrived at Wellington 22 March 1854. Part of the Archive of New Zealand Music Source of title - Supplied by diarist Accompanying material - As well as the letter from Valentine to his brother (1859) there are items (photocopied) regarding the voyage of the `Annie Wilson' (1854) which appear to have been kept with the journal; accompanying the journal is a letter from the donor giving additional information about the Corliss family and himself, a direct descendant of Amos Burr of the `Tory'. Description: In this paper Balling gives the history of the viola alta, which he played. He advocates its benefits, notes European prejudices on violas in general and advises on performance techniques. Description: A collection of Scottish pieces copied or arranged for piano by Alice McLean. A wide variety of dance music is included - hornpipes, strathspeys, jigs, reels, etc. Many have named composers and all have titles. There is one composition by Alice Rowley "Lagmhor strathspey". Part of the Archive of New Zealand Music Variations in title - Title on note written by the donor and inserted in the inside cover of the book reads 'The Laghmor [sic] Song Book written by Alice McLean at Laghmor Station, managed by her husband; Mrs McLean gathered these songs sung by the shepherds etc. (c.1890?).' No words are given to any of the music in the book. Source of title - Supplied title Other Titles - The Lagmhor Song Book Relationship complexity - See also MS-Papers-0440 and MS-Group-0185 Alice McLean was for many years a member of the Canterbury Caledonian Society and became an Honorary Life Member. As Alice Rowley, she met her first husband, Donald McLean, at a concert of the Society in which she had performed. This book is probably a compilation of Scottish music which she used when performing at Society gatherings.
