Description: The story of the Brooke family from Pyrford, Surrey and their immigration to New Zealand in 1910. The two sons, Jack and Cecil, began their farming life in the Kaikoura district as farm cadets. For seven years they farmed at Kaikoura from where the boys went to war and served with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles and later in the 1st New Zealand Machine Gun Squadron. After Cecil Brooke's leave he bought a small dairy farm at Ruakura in 1920 and 5 years later married Dorothy Hutchinson. They farmed at Ruakura for 34 years, and purchased a further 200 acres of peat swamp to break in. Description: Recipe book, begun in 1782, and with later recipes added. The recipes include instructions on making soap and medicines as well as food. Contains index at front. Includes newspaper cuttings of recipes from ca 1858, sketches of buildings and copies of some correspondence, the most recent of which is dated as 1947. The cuttings are from Wanganui newspapers. Many of the pages are encrusted with mud, possibly caused by one of the many floods which have occurred in Blenheim. Source of title - Supplied by Library Quantity: 1 volume(s). Physical Description: Mss, in several hands Provenance: Given to the donor by an elderly friend, E B Gilberd of Stokes Valley, in 1980s. The original owners appear to have lived in Blenheinm and Wanganui.

Description: The memoirs are those of the daughter writing about her mother's experiences as a settler and pioneer in the Timaru and Taranaki districts. A draft of `The lightning: A West Coast Iliad' and typewritten research notes relating to the early history of Westland including information about land purchases and excerpts and copies of correspondence by Ngai Tahu chiefs and James Mackay. Newspaper articles relating to South Island land purchases and the biography of John Tikao `The story of a Maori sailor'. Draft chapter `Gun-running in the King Country' and typewritten research papers and copies of correspondence relating to `Captain Mair's battles: His defeat of Te Kooti. 1870. Hard running fight near Rotorua' this includes a copy of a letter from Gilbert Mair to his brother Robert Mair, written from Ohinemutu in 1870 and copies of other letters. Includes five original typed pages of alphabetical lists of shipwrecks where the photocopying process did not include the left hand edge. Some sheets include references to newspaper articles.
