Leonard William Jury - Jury farm (Omata District, Taranaki)

Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Leonard Willaim Jury, great-great-grandson of the original owner; history of the Jury family. This history was compiled by Len Jury, ca 1985 and includes a history of the farm as well as information about the William Bryan, the Battle of Waireka, reminiscences related to the family and local history. Copy of article by NZ Historic Places Trust entitled `Archaeological investigations: Jury and Autridge farmsteads, Omata' (2007) The original owner was Elizabeth (nee Hoskin) wife of Jesse (Justinian) Jury. She purchased 46 acres of the Omata Block from the Plymouth Company in 1847. The Jury family arrived in New Plymouth on the `William Bryan' in 1841. In 2007 Leonard William Jury and his wife Heather owned the property at Omata and were awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Paul Keith Jarman; history of the Jarman family (written by James Gough Jarman b 1828) and the history of the farm ownership; `James Gough, founder of Nesslea 1865' (written by C J Jarman for the 1965 centennial of Nesslea); paper read before the Courtenay Agricultural & Pastoral Association by James Gough; land titles; photographs. Original owner was James Gough who purchased 128 hectares (known as Nesslea) in 1864. In 2007 the 'Essendon' portion of the estate was owned by his great-greatgrandson Paul Keith Jarman and his wife Ann. Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by John Colin McLean; history of the family and property (including photographs and extensive notes on Black Swamp neighbours) entitled `100 years at Black Swamp 1906-2006'. The original family members to acquire the land at Black Swamp (Waimea Estate) in 1906 were Duncan McLean (220 acres), David McLean (272 acres) and Alexander McLean (287 acres). Simcox, Francis Selwyn, 1880-1967 : Elizabeth Colenso, a biography, and other accounts

Description: The volume comprises Elizabeth Colenso (née Fairburn), a biography by her eldest granddaughter, Frances Edith Swabey which covers the years 1819-1904 (45 & 49 pages); an Account of a visit by the Turakina to the Crozet Islands, Feb 1907, by F M Simcox (6 pages); an account of the golden wedding of W H & F M Simcox, 1920, from the Otaki Mail, (3 pages); a dedication of the Simcox Memorial Window in All Saints Church, Otaki, 1930, from the Otaki Mail (3 pages); an incident in W M Simcox's life and poem entitled `Kapiti Island' (3 pages) and a reference to Stratford House at Camp Hill, Birmingham, England. There are two indexes, one for pages 1-45, the other for pages 108-122. F S Simcox compiled this volume in stages, beginning in 1955 when his eldest sister, Edith Swabey, asked him to type Elizabeth Colenso's biography; as time passed additional projects presented which now form part of the volume: accounts of a visit to the Crozet Islands by F M Simcox, of the golden wedding of W H and F M Simcox, a dedication of a stained glass window, an incident in W M Simcox's life and information about Stratford House, Birmingham, a history of which had been written by J W Simcox. Gore, Ross Digby, 1904-1981 :Which solves the mystery of Young Nick's Head [ca 1957]

Description: Six-panelled account giving further information about Nicholas Young, his life and premature death in Hawaii and his association with Captain Cook. These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News. In 1953, 48 of them were collected and published as a booklet called 'It happened in New Zealand' by Ross Gore. Information supplied by a great-niece of Nicholas Young to the cartoonist and supplementing his lack of knowledge displayed in a previous cartoon (B-140-017) Quantity: 1 drawing(s). Nora Elizabeth Kenworthy-Thompson - Farm at Apotu Road, Kauri, Northland

Description: The papers consist of: Application form submitted by Nora Elizabeth Kenworthy-Thompson; original land grant to John McBeth; verification when farm was passed to Murdoch McBeth, and later to Nora Kenworthy-Thompson; line of ownership, 1860-2005; narrative of family history and family pedigree (5 generational chart); photographs John McBeth and his wife Ann came to New Zealand from Nova Scotia with Ann's father Murdoch Mclennan. They were granted 160 acres of land at Kauri, Northland in 1867. He broke in the land and in 1874 built a homestead on the property. John grew vegetables on the land and over time acquired a small dairy herd. On his death in 1900 the farm was taken over by his son Murdoch and then by his daughter Nora who married Ralph Kenworthy-Thompson. See also Burtenshaw, May. From castle to cave.
