Description: The essay traces the Fissenden family of Birling, Kent, to New Zealand and documents their lifestyles subsequent to their arrival. Beginning in 1875 the Fissendens and their descendants built a new life in New Zealand buying land, opening businesses and raising their families. Description: The story of the Brooke family from Pyrford, Surrey and their immigration to New Zealand in 1910. The two sons, Jack and Cecil, began their farming life in the Kaikoura district as farm cadets. For seven years they farmed at Kaikoura from where the boys went to war and served with the New Zealand Mounted Rifles and later in the 1st New Zealand Machine Gun Squadron. After Cecil Brooke's leave he bought a small dairy farm at Ruakura in 1920 and 5 years later married Dorothy Hutchinson. They farmed at Ruakura for 34 years, and purchased a further 200 acres of peat swamp to break in. Description: Journal of the voyage of the Armed Tender, HMS Chatham, captained by Lieutenant William Robert Broughton. HMS Chatham was one of the ships under the command of Captain Vancouver in his exploration of the Pacific and of the North American coast. Describes the voyage from England via Cape of Good Hope to Australia and New Zealand; activity at Dusky Sound, the discovery of the Chatham Islands, the voyage to Tahiti, with descriptions of the inhabitants, and of the Bounty mutineers. The voyage to Hawaii, with a description of the islands and their inhabitants, followed by the voyage to Canada and the Californian coast, before returning to Hawaii. Bell gives full accounts of the places and inhabitants visited. Description: The essay details the German origins of the Hessey family, lives of Nottinghamshire forebears of Joseph and Jane Hessey and family who immigrated to Australia in 1858 on the `Melbourne'. Jane died during the voyage and James married Caroline Stuart, a widow, in Melbourne in 1861. James and Caroline came onto Canterbury in 1862 and settled at Waikuku Creek near to James' daughter Mary and her husband John Ranby. Description: The essay details the life and times of Elijah Tucker and his family. The Tucker line is traced back to 1769 in Somerset. Elijah was a writer, editor and publisher, travelling throughout Europe before marrying Marianna Caigou. Five children were born in London and in 1856 the family emigrated to New Plymouth on the `Chatham'. Shortly after their arrival they moved to Nelson. Elijah was the editor of several New Zealand newspapers before he retired to his farm in Pangatotara. After the death of his first wife he remarried Susan Middleton. Description: Alfred Dickinson and his wife Margaret Furness emigrated to new Zealand and persuaded brother George and his wife Martha Jane Morris to do so also. They settled at Sydenham, together running a mobile hardware business. Later Alfred had a hardware shop and taxi business. His son James was killed in WW1. Alfred started a funeral business using partner's name Park & Co. In 1912 George moved to Riccarton where he had a general store and taxi business. He died suddenly in 1937. Both brothers are buried in Bromley Cemetery, Christchurch. The essay includes details of the family's Lancashire roots, immigration to Lyttelton in 1909 on the SS Ionic, life in Christchurch.
