Description: The bulk of the collection comprises diaries, notebooks, correspondence and papers of James Coutts Crawford, 1817-1889 and correspondence with his sons H D, A D, C J, and J D Crawford who held a diplomatic post in China, and daughter Janet Willis. James Coutts Crawford's papers cover his naval career, sojourn in Australia, farming and development of land purchased at Miramar (Wellington) and service as Provincial Geologist. The papers reflect his interest in natural history, agriculture and mining. Early material was used in `Recollections of Travel in Australia and New Zealand' published in 1880. The papers of his sons deal with the development of the Miramar Estate and sheep farming. Arrangement: This collection is arranged so that the papers of James Coutts Crawford and each member of his family are self-contained as far as possible. The outward correspondence to members of the immediate family is collected under the writer while inward correspondence is confined to letters from extended family members and other writers. Description: Arranged in four parts this journal explores the history and whakapapa of the Ngati Toa people. It includes detailed whakapapa from Marangaiparoa, son of Toa Rangatira, with a special emphasis on the relationships between Ngati Toa and other closely related Kawhia tribes. The manuscript also details the migration of the Tainui and Te Arawa canoes to Aotearoa, with accompanying karakia; Purakau, or short historical narratives, about numerous Ngati Toa tupuna (ancestors); The migrations of the Ngati Toa tribes from Kawhia to the Kapiti district; And an examination of Maori theological concepts, and includes a discussion about the descent of the Maori people from Adam and Eve. Also records the baptism of various people into the Mormon church at Takapuwahia pa, Porirua, during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Publication - This manuscript may be the original source material used by Sir Maui Pomare for the book "Legends of the Maori", 2 volumes [1930]. Description: After the Allport family went from Birmingham, England to a new life in Nelson in 1842, the difficulties of the New Zealand Company lead young Thomas to New South Wales, Australia for work. There he met and married Rachel Willett in 1847. She was from a Buckinghamshire family. After a time spent in Queensland they went to Nelson for 13 years before farming at Tua Marina from 1865, raising a family of 11. From 1879 they had the Panama Boarding House in Picton where Rachel was hostess for 35 years. She died aged 90, having outlived her husband and six of their children Quantity: 1 folder(s).

Description: Manuscript of the first translation from Dutch into English (made for Sir Joseph Banks) of Tasman's journal from Batavia in 1642-1643, by C G Woide. Woide includes an introduction to Joseph Banks on the nature of his transcription. There is also a small lexicon of some of the Dutch words used by Tasman. The journal begins on the 14th August 1462 as Tasman and his crew set sail from Batavia aboard the `Heemskerck' and the `Zeehaen'. The vessels travelled south via Mauritius and Tasmania. The entry for 13 Dec 1642 describes their first sighting of New Zealand. From New Zealand Tasman continued on to Tonga and Fiji, then returning to Java. Volume also includes a tipped in letter from the British Museum to the Alexander Turnbull Library (1960) regarding the provenance of the volume and how it had been originally owned by Sir Joseph Banks. Another facsimile copy of this journal by Woide is held by the British Library (MS 8947). Charles G Woide was commissioned by Sir Joseph Banks to translate Tasman's original journal from the Dutch language. A note by Sir Clements Robert Markham in the prefix of the volume indicates Woide hoped to be paid £30 for the transcription work. Markham also advises he will let Edward Stanhope (politician and owner of Bank's property estate) of the removal of the volume from Banks' personal library. Woide was an orientalist, biblical scholar and Assistant Librarian in the British Museum from 1782 until his death in 1790. Quantity: 1 volume(s) (338 pages). Description: Comprises four histories submitted by A W Glassford in support of the New Zealand Century Farm and Station Award application. They cover the pre European and early settler use of the Matakanui Station area, the histories of Matakanui Station, Otago, the Glassford family, Dougalston farm situated on the former township of Drybread, and the Rankeillor farm property. Original owners Henry (Harry) Gordon-Glassford (1764-1819) and his halfbrother James Glassford Gordon-Glassford (1771-1834) emigrated from Scotland to Australia and New Zealand purchasing 80,000 acres in the Lauder Survey District, 12 Km from Omakau, Central Otago. In 1864 the brothers took over the lease of Run 223 from Messrs Webster and Thomson. The run ran from the top of the Dunstan Range to the Manuherikia River, Lauder Creek and Chatto Creek. They operated under the name Glassford Bros. and the run became known as Matakanui Station. In 2008 the property was awarded the NZ Century Farm and Station Award to mark 100 years of continous ownership by one family. Quantity: 4 Electronic document(s).
