Description: The bulk of the collection comprises diaries, notebooks, correspondence and papers of James Coutts Crawford, 1817-1889 and correspondence with his sons H D, A D, C J, and J D Crawford who held a diplomatic post in China, and daughter Janet Willis. James Coutts Crawford's papers cover his naval career, sojourn in Australia, farming and development of land purchased at Miramar (Wellington) and service as Provincial Geologist. The papers reflect his interest in natural history, agriculture and mining. Early material was used in `Recollections of Travel in Australia and New Zealand' published in 1880. The papers of his sons deal with the development of the Miramar Estate and sheep farming. Arrangement: This collection is arranged so that the papers of James Coutts Crawford and each member of his family are self-contained as far as possible. The outward correspondence to members of the immediate family is collected under the writer while inward correspondence is confined to letters from extended family members and other writers. There is some overlapping of papers especially where the Miramar estate is concerned. Quantity: 406 folder(s). 3 volume(s). 4 Linear Metres. Description: Ten seated Maori men rowing a canoe, with one man standing at the prow on the right. The canoe appears to be double-hulled. All the men have topknot hairstyles. Derived from Gilsemans' 'View of Murderers' Bay' from Abel Tasman's journal and shows Maori in Golden Bay at the time of Tasman's attempted landing on 19 December 1642 See also PUBL-0087-173 (Vaertuig en Gedaente der inwoonders van Selandia Nova. p 173 [Amsterdam, 1705], from Witsen, Nicolaes. Noord en Oost Tartarye. Amsterdam, 1705, between p 172 and 173). Description: Coastal profiles of Cape Foulwind (near Westport, West Coast, South Island) and its surrounding landscape in December 1642, during the visit of Abel Tasman. This was the first area of New Zealand seen by Tasman. Each profile has a lengthy inscription in Dutch below it. Dutch title is translated into English. Further translation of lower inscription reads: Thus appears the Staten Landt to south of the rocky point when you sail along the coast and views of rocky point which appear thus as you can see here below. Staten Landt was the name given to New Zealand by Abel Tasman. In later maps it appeared as New Zealand. Other Titles - Aldus verthoont het vaste landt.. Quantity: 1 b&w photo-mechanical print(s). Description: Golden Bay in December 1642, during the visit of Abel Tasman. A canoe of Maori men in the foreground, and two views of Tasman's ships, the Heemskerck and the Zeehaen (both flying the Dutch flag), sailing away in the left foreground, and surrounded by canoes and firing their canon in the middle distance. A rowboat (the cockboat of the Zeehaen) is between the two ships, with its occupants being attacked in the centre. Also in the left foreground can be seen the Heemskerck's pinnace towing the Zeehaen's cockboat back to the two ships after the attack. The hills of Golden Bay form a backdrop to the scene. The canoe in the foreground appears to be double-hulled. The rowers all have topknot hairstyles. The man standing on the right at the prow of the canoe is wearing a woven garment, covering his shoulders and tied at the breast, while the others have loin-cloths, and in one case, a garment that envelopes the torso.
