Description: Two maps on one sheet. The top map is a fascimile of the chart of New Zealand leg of Abel Tasman's voyage, 1642-1643, reproduced from a copy of the journal of the voyages held at the General State Archives in Hague. The bottom map then compares Tasman's route plotted relative to New Zealand's coastline as it is known today. The map translates the original into English, plots the charted path and adds the dates at given points along the journey. It includes some quotes from Tasman's diary as well as some of the events. The route interpretation along the western shoreline has been researched and compiled by Mr Grahame Anderson. The names on the original chart have been translated and shown on this map in italic script to enable natural features to be compared with those on the chart. Some additional features named subsequent to Tasman's voyage are shown in smaller text to aid identification of the coastline. The Department of Survey and Land Information, in association with the New Zealand Abel Tasman 1992 Commission commemorates Tasman's voyage with this specially drawn present day map.
