Description: The papers consist of: Application form and land documents to support the application submitted by Robert Gillow Elliott; history of the family's ownership; Plan of Mangatahi; `The Mangatahi Settlement, particulars, terms and conditions', 1907 (photocopy of printed material). Original owner was Robert William Andrew Elliott who acquired 568 acres of the Mangatahi Block by ballot in 1907. On his death in 1933 the farm was run as an estate by his wife Ruby. After her death it was farmed in partnership by their children Joyce and Robert. After three years Robert leased his sister's share, until 2003 when he bought her out. In 2007 it was being run by Robert's son David. In 2007 the property was awarded the New Zealand Century Farm and Station award to mark over 100 years of continuous ownership by one family. He and his brother James went to the Owaka distict and bought 56 hectares of land in 1907 where John farmed sheep, a few cows, felled timber and killed rabbits to earn a living. His son William took ownership of the property from his mother Annie when his father was accidentally killed in 1941. In 2008 the property which had increased to over 400 acres was owned by John's grandson John Douglas Mitchell and great-grandsons and under the name Mitchell Farming Company Ltd.
