Description: Photographs of a range of industries in New Zealand, possibly related to the Christchurch International Exhibition in 1906-1907. Industries include animal related products including wool, from fellmongery to transportation and finally weaving; meat works, including the slaughter house, the mutton cooling room, shipping fozen mutton, the beef cooling room; butter, at the Hautapu Butter Factory, showing butter in the factory, and delivering butter at Ngaruawahia Railway Station; the Waikato Bacon Factory, and pig carcases. Other industries include flax, with scenes showing a flax mill, carting flax to the mill, stripping, washing and drying flax, and also grading hemp and loading bales of it at Auckland wharves; kauri timber industry, from felling the trees, hauling logs by bullock, floating logs over the Wairoa Falls, sorting timber at the mill booms, timber mill on the Wairoa River, and a million feet of sawn timber at the mill. The latter part of the album shows scenes of gold dredging on the Buller Gorge, hydraulic gold-mining at Ross, Westland; coal mining at Brunner; kauri gum diggers and a warehouse storing kauri gum; and finally views of the Sugar Refinery in Auckland, and a warehouse filled with sacks of sugar. Description: Album belonging to T W (Thomas Watson) Brown. Scenes around New Zealand, many probably taken by Brown, some taken by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department, and some of Lake Te Anau, Lake Wakatipu, and Milford Sound taken by FGR (Frederick George Radcliffe). The first part of the album is mainly images of tramping, camping and hunting in the Orongorongo Range and the Rimutakas, with some of the people identified, including Roley Neale and W A Neale (William Augustus Neale). Other sequences of images are a number in and around Lake Waikaremoana, including several of men fishing showing their catches; climbing in the Tongariro National Park area; views of the small towns Mohaka, Mataatua; areas around Titirangi, Kawau, Hamilton and Tauranga. Dated from assesment of the women's dresses. This image has been reproduced in three publications (as at February 2003): in "The era of the bush tram in New Zealand" by Paul Mahoney (1998, p 51); in "Rails through the bush" by Bob Stott (1973); and "The bush tram to the mill\" by Bob Stott (1981, p 51). The information given in Paul Mahoney's book suggests that this is a picnic party (as given in a pencilled inscription beneath the original print in Godber Album Vol 109, p 47 (PA1-q-102)); but Bob Stott suggests this conveyance was "used to bring bush camp families out to the relative civilisation of the mill settlement and the like".
