Arapuni and Waitaki Hydro Schemes

Description: Opens with views of the site of the Arapuni Hydro scheme and the Paturuahine Gorge which was flooded to form Lake Arapuni. This is followed by images of the repairs to the one of the water channels that took place in 1932. The rest are photographs of the dam at various stages of construction, the dam completed, views of the new lake, water flowing over the spillway, and the Arapuni falls created below the dam Two views of Atiamuri show the Pohaturoa Rock in the background Ten images of Stewart's Claim, a location south of Okarito, show scenic views some with gold dredging equipment lying around, a beach and a river estuary on which is a barge loaded with pipes. Eight images record before and after effects of controlled blasting on a limestone bluff at Cobden Quarry, Greymouth, photographed on the 15th of January, 1932 The last section are views of the construction of the Waitaki Hydro, and the new Lake Waitaki. Description: Album recording a motoring and camping holiday through the South Island of New Zealand. This took in the New Zealand South Seas Exhibition in Dunedin and included the West Coast, Otago, and Canterbury. The central part of the album has images of Khandallah, Wellington, and the family home in that suburb. Family photographs include Doug on his Norton Motorcycle, and Jack and Neville similarly posed on a Douglas Motorcycle. Rene and Frank stand at the net holding tennis rackets, and mother has several images with young Joyce. The last part of the album recordes something of a holiday to Auckland where the family camped at Brown's Bay and took a trip to Kawau Island. A group shot on Mt Messanger on the way back and some views of Pukekura Park New Plymouth complete the album Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s).

Description: Views of the Mangatarera Stream and Mount Holdsworth opens a record of a climb to the summit of Holdsworth. The party consists of six women and about five men. There are views of the stream and the swing bridge leading to the Holdsworth track; several shots of the Mountain House with the climbing party arranged along the veranda, and Mr McGregor's party who had arrived on horseback to fix the water tank; the climbing party grouped in the bush on the way up the mountain and on the open alpine ridges; a surveyors tent in the alpine tussock; the party eating beside the Holdsworth Trig; views of the Tararua Ranges from the summit of Mount Holdsworth. Interspersed among the main image groups are photographs of a trip to Rotorua. This involved a group of people in two motor cars. There are images of the Hamurana Stream and Springs at Rotorua, and of children diving for pennies at Whakarewarewa. Views of mounts Ruapehu and Ngauruhoe, the Mangaehuehu Stream, the Crater Lake and the crater on Ngauruhoe, and mountaineers crossing the ice field on Ruapehu and climbing Ngauruhoe. There is a view of Matterhorn Peak the name of which was changed to Girdlestone Peak in 1922. Two images of a surveyors' camp in the Waimarino Bush. The Tern Arch and Little Hawke's Crag on the Buller Gorge road. A view of Lake Tarawerea from the top of Mount Tarawera. The final photograph is a view along the beach to Pencarrow Head, Wellington. Pasted inside the front cover is a cutting from `The Weekly News', Wednesday, December 26, 1945, entitled `New Zealand's highest memorial' by JWG, describing the renaming in 1922, of Matterhorn Peak (Tongariro National Park) to Girdlestone Peak in honour of Hubert Earle Girdlestone after he was killed in action in August 1918. Description: Photograph album presented to David Ziman in Reefton, 1909, with wooden presentation casket. The album contains an illuminated address which is signed by Reefton representatives, photographs of Reefton, the Gorge, Golden Fleece battery, Wealth of Nations (old and new mills), Progress Mill, mining machinery (vanners, stampers and aerial tramways), Globe Hill, and Inangahua Valley. Photographer was William Sherlock of Upper Broadway, Reefton. The casket of which the case is white pine, veneered with mottled Kauri was the work of Mr Jewell of Christchurch. Other - See Photographic Archive back file for printed information relating to the album Source of title - Title supplied by Library In March 1909 the Ziman Presentation Committee representing the residents of Reefton decided to welcome back David Ziman by presenting him an address, embellished with photographs of the Consolidated Goldfields of New Zealand Ltd works and views of Reefton in a handsome casket made of New Zealand wood. This was done in recognition of Ziman's services to mining in the region. The casket and book of photographs were on display in the shop window of Mr Sherlock, photographer, Upper Broadway, until it was formally presented to David Ziman at a function on the evening of July 9, 1909. Occasion was documented in the Inangahua Herald, 10 July 1909. Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Physical Description: 295 x 340 mm album bound in red morocco, with gold gilding on the cover, and embossed with the intials D Z. Enclosed in a casket made of Kauri, lined with red velvet, and veneered with Totara, Kauri, Ake-ake, Black Ake-ake, Rewarewa and Ti-toke, with a silver plate reading "David Ziman, Reefton, March 1909" on the centre top. Provenance: Donated by Mrs Naomi Roberts, Ottawa, Canada, in 2009

Description: Views of mounts Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu, but more specifically locations on them such as crater lakes, snow fields, and glaciers. In many cases there are people in the views, almost all of the walking rather than skiing. There are a number of images photographed in the gorge of the Whakapapanui Stream on Mount Ruapehu. Description: Photographs showing New Zealand geological features taken in 1939, and images used to illustrate "From Mountains to Meteorites" by Brian Mason and Simon Nathan. The album photographs were taken in an area west of the Volcanic Plateau extending from the Taumarunui area in the north and including the Kaitieki/Retaruke area, the Tangarakau River and the Wanganui River to Pipiriki in the south. The images record many secondary rivers and streams, fault lines, rock formations, volcanic deposits, clays, and waterfalls. Photographs in the album pages were taken by Brian Mason during a geological expedition exploring for oil of which he was a member. Bound by Parliamentary Library, using blank pages to bulk out the contents. Red buckram, half red morocco Catalogued by Parliamentary Library as the work of I W Wilson and ca 1910. The signature and style is that of L W Wilson, although the signature appears to read I W Wilson. The Alexander Turnbull Library holds the original watercolour for one reproduction, the view of Lake Manapouri (reference number A-123-002). It also holds second copies of several other reproductions, 5 with a separate printed portfolio cover titled 'New Zealand scenery. From water colour drawings by L W Wilson Esq. S and W Mackay, booksellers, Wellington'(reference number A-192-018/022). The portfolio-style cover with the latter group includes cotton ties opposite a spine binding, suggesting that the reproductions were unbound. Dating: Wilson left New Zealand in 1904. He probably had these copies made before leaving. The view of Manawatu Gorge was also published as a postcard. The Library holds a copy at E-279-160 sent in 1906. Title supplied by Library. Description: Panoramic view looking down over the Manawatu River in the foreground. The road (heading from the Woodville Ferry Reserve towards Ashhurst) runs from far left centre past a house. An advertisement for "The new Essex Super Six", 'Andersen & Hansen Service Station' is on the road by the house. The road then crosses a bridge and winds along the curve of the hill on the far side. On the near side of the house there is also a section of railway line which can also be seen on a bend on the right hand side further along in the centre right middle distance.
