Description: A group of Maori in front of a tent shelter. The group includes two seated women, one breast-feeding an infant, a naked toddler reclining in front and two young men standing behind, one with a rifle and cartridge case. A tewhatewha (weapon) lied in fron on top of a pile of cloaks. A third woman kneelds to the right, her back to the artist and her face hidden. According to Oliver's accompanying text, the scene is at Kororareka (modern Russell) in 1851, during the feast (hakari) put on by Tamati Waka Nene for Governor George Grey. 'The man on the right with the musket is Neddy, who fought against us under Heki [Hone Heke] at Ruapekapeka. The girl next to him is Maria ... the woman with the baby is said to be the daughter of Chevalier Dillon; and on the left is Jane, who was famous for her personal attractions ... Description: A Maori chief standing in a beached canoe, addressing a crowd of warriors, mostly seated, with a few standing. Two other long canoes are on the beach, one with a sail is in the water, and others are pulled up close to a pa or kainga in the left background. A dog sniffs the ground in the foreground. Most men are armed with guns, although one on the far right holds a taiaha. A gourd and flax kit are centrally placed amongst one group of men. Earle's text reads: "A party of warriors had collected at the Bay of Islands for the purpose of making a hostile visit to a tribe on the banks of the Thames. They were detained by contrary winds; and for several days were constantly engaged in listening to speeches from their chiefs, who addressed them from a canoe hauled on shore ... one [canoe], which I measured, was 70 feet long, and carried one hundred fighting men." A single figure, Rangihaeata, is standing centrally, addressing Sir George Grey, who is seated in a chair close to Rangihaeata. The incident took place at Waikanae in 1851. Description: View of the trenches at Gate Pa, Tauranga, looking east, the front of the pa to the left, the rear to the right, after its capture by British forces in April 1864. European soldiers standing guard, two carrying a stretcher in the background, a rifle and parts of the broken palisade lying in the foreground, and wounded and dead Maori men visible in the trenches, including Reweti, in a trench to the right, facing the viewer. A tunnel on the left is marked as a covered way, and a tall pole in the background, on a slant is the flagpole. A low land formation in the background to the left is noted as Maungatapu cliffs with cemetery. Tauranga Harbour can be seen in the background Very similar to A-033-009. Robley made many copies of this view Another such view in Cowan's New Zealand Wars has Robley's additional explanatory text around the outside (neg 10985 1/2). The section along the left, to the left of the trench and inside the palisade is a covered passage leading to rifle pits. The figure lying in the left trench is described as 'dead Maori on blanket'. The figure in the right-hand trench is described as 'bearded wounded Maori' and 'Sticks knocked from the palisade' and 'sticks of palisade scathed by shot', '68th sentry on the higher part of the Pa', as well as 'fallen flagstaff in rear' are noted. Description: View inside Taupo Pa, at Plimmerton looking out to sea with part of Mana Island out to sea on the right and the South Island in the distance. The palisades of the pa run down to the water's edge on the left, with a raupo whare propped against the fence line. A Maori family (father, mother with a child on her back and a toddler at her side) is walking away from the viewer, and three armed Maori are seated or reclining in the centre foreground, beside a cabbage tree or dracena plant. Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997. Ngati Toa built Taupo Pa probably in the late 1830s or 1840s. According to land court evidence by Wi Parata most of Ngati Kimihia were resident in the South Island until the Wairau Affair in 1843. Wi Parata lived at Taupo with his uncle Te Hiko-o-te-Rangi and the Ngati Te Maunu until his death in 1845, where Te Rauparaha made a speech relating to Taupo stating that it formerly belonged to Te Hiko and was later acquired by Te Rauparaha. Description: The cartoon shows Wiremu Kingi Tarapipi Te Waharoa (Wiremu Thompson after baptism) saying to a Maori chief that 'The general (Carey) is in disgrace you say, and the queen's troops are to be sent away, and the volunteers and rangers are coming against us. Then, Kingi, (Wi Kingi te Rangitake?) the sooner we surrender the better'. To the right in the background is a ship at sea and troops are marching towards it, overseen by Brigadier-General Carey on horseback. A group of volunteer Pakeha troops are marching up from the middle distance on the right. The Cartoon shows the moment when Wiremu Tamehana decides that the Maori must surrender. In 1860 Wiremu Thompson travelled to Taranaki in the roles of negotiator and mediator between Maori and Pakeha. Later, when war broke out in the Waikato, he again acted as peacemaker, but his attempts were not completely appreciated by Pakeha leaders of the time. The drawing is possibly the work of G. F. von Tempsky. The seated woman in the centre is strongly reminiscent of his work, and he is known to have drawn illustrations for 'Punch, or the Wellington Charivari' in the mid-1860s.
