Description: Views of New Zealand collected by Invercargill firm Erskine & Whitmore. Scenes taken by various photographers including Hart, Campbell & Co., and Coxhead & Le Sueur. Several views show Queenstown under floods in 1878; others of the Queenstown-Lakes Region, Waitati, Gore and Dunedin in the South Island. In the North Island, one shows a large picnic party travelling in three horse-drawn coaches, stopped at Ngauranga; many show a range of steam locomotives including J Class, K Class, F43, E22, H Class and A Class, in the Upper Hutt area, the Wairarapa, and on the Rimutaka line. Several at the end of the album show the effects of a major slip which blocked the mouth of the Summit Tunnel at the top of the Rimutaka Incline. Description: Album of landscapes taken by various photographers including Wheeler & Sons and the Burton Brothers, circa 1870s and 1880s. All the views are of New Zealand except the last sequence (p 33-37) showing Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest are views of a wool wagon drawn by oxen, crossing a ford; a series showing an unidentified curved viaduct under construction (p 28-32); and a number showing a farm run by J F L Jetter at Te Puke when the land was partially cleared, with cattle grazing in paddocks, and Mr Jetter standing by a horse in a paddock in front of his home. Many of the images show uncleared land, with a deep ravine filled with native bush and tree ferns, and a stream running through (p 24-27). Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Views, chiefly unidentified, of a trip in the South Island in January 1896, photographed by Algernon Charles Gifford. Most of the photographs are landscape views of lakes and mountains in the Wakatipu area, but there are a number showing a group of six unidentified people in the garden of a single-storeyed house with verandahs, at Paradise. In another scene a man and woman, two of the previous group, are shown in a field with the man wearing riding clothes, seated on a white horse, and the woman standing by the horse's head with a dog beside her. Also one photograph shows three young girls, Bessie and Daisy Fergus, and Agnes Mill, also at Paradise. A large two-storeyed house with verandahs upstairs and downstairs is seen in one image. An envelope attached inside the back cover, contains 14 loose photographs of similar views. Description: Album of pressed ferns, most of which are used to frame images of New Zealand, but some pages consist solely of pressed ferns. The photographs show New Zealand scenes, and include two postcards of collages. One has the legend "Maoridom" and at the base "The old order changeth" with a photograph of Maori king Tawhiao, and various artifacts including taiaha, cloaks, and two preserved heads of Maori. The other shows portraits of a number of Maori men and women, and views of Parihaka and Ohinemutu. Among the views of new Zealand scenery are images of the White Terraces in eruption, the Pink Terraces, Manawatu Gorge, Dunedin, Queen Street (Auckland), Lake Ada, and Tois Tois [sic] Island on the Clinton River, Lake Te Anau. Description: A view of Lake Wakatipu on a calm day, with a snow-laden Mount Earnslaw rising in the distance, shrouded in some low cloud. In the foreground are three horesemen, their horses and a dog. One man sits astride his horse; the second sits on a rock beside his horse; and the third man bends to make a fire. The dog lies resting on its side.
