Description: A crowd of people outside the tobacconists store run by R Farmer in Masterton, 26 September 1887, the day of the general election. The group includes a row of boys and some unidentified Maori. Above, three male effigies are attached to the upper wall of the shop. These represent the three candidates for the seat. They are George Beetham (the dandy), who was the winner of the election, R E Hawkins (the pirate), and A W Hogg (the pig). The photograph was taken by Albert Edward Winzenberg, from the verandah of the Club Hotel. (The effigies were later auctioned).
