Description: Reminiscences of early days in Marlborough written in 1857; copies of verse and satire by the family; copy of letter and verse by Henry Harper on Martha Adam's death, plan of family home, Redwood; biographical details from the Cyclopedia of New Zealand and newspaper clippings concerning her husband and eldest son; and sketches she made as a girl in England. Describes her English childhood, marriage to William Adams in 1840 and emigration to Nelson 1850. She describes the `mud hovel' in which the Adams family first lived when taking up a Marlborough run in 1852, and recalls the islolated life which at times found her coping alone with house and farm work, sick children, food shortages and vagrants. Her account ends with the family's move to a new property `Langley Dale', on the Wairau River. Probably when Andersen was himself the Chief Librarian.
