Description: Interview with Robert (Bob) Gordon Dunlop, born in Hawera in 1920. Talks about his family's background in Scotland and New Zealand. Comments on his father serving in the mounted rifles in Egypt and the south of France during World War I. Talks about the hardships growing up on a dairy farm in the 1920s, living in a two-bedroom house with a family of nine and milking cows in the early morning. Discusses food, clothing, family holidays, haymaking and his schooling. Comments on Maori land issues, politics and the Depression. Refers to working for stock and station agents after leaving school, first as an office boy, then as an auctioneer's clerk and later a junior agent with a car. Talks about Hawera Aerodrome being built on part of his grandfather's farm. Recalls hearing about war being declared in Europe but not joining the army until he was 21. Talks about being assigned to serve in the Pacific after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour, and being sent to Fiji. Comments on doing construction work there, and later being sent to Norfolk Island. Refers to having Jack Marshall as Company commander. Talks about going to New Caledonia and then to Guadalcanal on American destroyers, and the devastation they found at Lunga Beach. Describes the taking of Mono Island by New Zealand troops, being in the first lot ashore, and some New Zealanders being killed by American shells. Refers to their 1914 Enfield rifles, dealing with fear and stress, and how officers dealt with the situation. Comments on the attitudes of veterans from Europe to Pacific theatre veterans after the war, and on the effects of his experiences on his life. Talks about being invalided out of the Army after returning to New Zealand and working on Alec Corrigan's farm for a time. Discusses returning to work for a stock and station agent, meeting and marrying Gladys, and their children. Description: This collection is comprised of further family papers relating to the life and career of Sir Apirana Turupa Ngata. It contains material relating to Ngata's family, his professional career which includes his work for the government, his iwi and the Māori war effort. It includes material relating to the study of Māori culture and Ngāti Porou history and whakapapa in particular. This collection also contains material by Ngata's grand uncle, Major Rapata Wahawaha, his father, Paratene Ngata and other members of the Ngata whanau. Language - About half of this collection is written in te reo Maori (Maori language). An earlier accession received from the Ngata family is at MS-Group-0941. Other papers of Sir Apirana Ngata have been acquired from other sources. Of particular importance are the Maori Purposes Fund Board papers, which includes correspondence and research notes by Ngata (MS-Papers-0189) and correspondence between Ngata and Sir Peter Buck held in the Eric Ramsden papers(MS-Group-0181). Arrangement: This collection has been kept separate from the first collection (MS-Group-0941) which was received by the family. Although it is of the same provenance, the collection may have been kept and managed separately before it came to the library. Description: Contains minute books; correspondence; monthly reports of the Disabled Servicemen's Re-establishment League; Rehabilitation Board and Disabled Servicemen's Re-establishment League manuals; newsletters; newspaper clippings; a 1955 report of the special investigation committee of the Disabled Servicemen's Re-establishment League; files re restructuring; promotional material; and a visitors' book Also includes Christchurch Times and Star Sick Fund Loans Committee minute book (1933-1947), ledgers (1884-1952), account book (1933-1952), and contribution book (1924-1952) Source of title - supplied title Established in 1930 as a semi-autonomous body, the Disabled Soldiers' Civil Re-establishment League was concerned with the employment of those former members of the armed forces with physical disabilities. District Branch committees were established to assist disabled ex-soldiers with finding employment, providing vocational training and providing payments to supplement their pensions or earnings. Factories and shops were established in the four main centres. In 1939 the constitution was altered to provide assistance to all disabled ex-members of the armed forces. The name also changed to Disabled Servicemen's Re-establishment League (Inc). In 1941 the League was appointed an agent of the Rehabilitation Board; this entailed acting on the Board's behalf in assessing the needs of individual cases. The government undertook to provide suitable premises for the organisation. In 1969 the League was appointed by Government to administer its policy concerning rehabilitation of all people with disabilities. In 1974 the organisation name was changed again to Rehabilitation League NZ (Inc). In 1990 the organisation was restructured and the name changed to Workbridge.
