Description: Shows two huts beside and end of the lake, one with a group of six Maori (probably three men and three women) five of them seated, in front of it. At the entrance way to the other a hut man is about to enter carrying a flat bowl with steam rising from it. In the centre foreground is a three?-legged cauldron. In the lake water at right a figure stands at the back of a canoe. There is a grassy island in the lake and beyond is flat-rolling land partly covered with bush. Description: Medal recto shows heraldic elements: the New Zealand coat of arms, an agricultural coat of arms, and a flax plant at top centre. Description: A group of war canoes racing, some with sails. In the centre of the group is the missionary schooner, Karere, flying a red and blue ensign. A headland is in the background. Reprinted in the Quarterly papers of the Church Missionary Society in 1849. The image was also used to illustrate Rev. William Yate's 'An account of New Zealand' (London, 1835) opp. p. 184, with title The mission boat accompanying a New Zealand war expedition. Engraved by S. Williams.
