They settled in Nelson where Elizabeth opened a girl's boarding school and took part in musical activities. They later moved to a property at Onekaka, Golden Bay, and then to Tukurua. A lengthy land dispute with local Maori at Tukurua left the family homeless, with Elizabeth and the children living in a disused whare.
