Description: Mainly letters to family in England from Maggie describing the voyage out on the `Sir George Pollock' in 1861 to Nelson, and her time in New Zealand to 1870. The letters contain references to Bishop and Mrs Hobhouse, Bishop and Mrs Abraham, Rev Thatcher and Richard Barton of Upper Hutt where her husband Rev John Herring was a clergyman until 1870. Foxley Norris album

Description: Photographic album created by Joseph Foxley Norris, with many images of places visited in Great Britain, including castles, cathedrals, stately homes, ports, landscapes, and bridges. Joseph Foxley Norris was a founding member of the Cyclists' Touring Club in England, and was a member of the Pickwick Bicycle Club in England with one image being a group portrait of members of the club. A number of the English scenes were photographed by G.W.W. (George Washington Wilson). Other regions visited include Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro. Views of New Zealand are mostly in the South Island, with a few of Wellington (including Government Buildings, Parliament Buildings and Government House). One photograph taken by James Bragge shows a group of unidentified Maori standing outside a meeting house in Masterton. South Island views include a bicycle "meet" in Christchurch, with a large crowd gathered, and a number of penny-farthing bicycles visible. A number of images show men riding penny-farthing bicycles and the dangers of so doing, with posed views of two men underneath their bicycles and one clutching a fence, taken in and around Christchurch. On page 108 is hand-printed award `Anniversary Sports, Christchurch,N.Z. 16th December 1880. The following ten views taken from the Cathedral Tower, Christchurch, are the 3rd prize in the One Mile Champion Bicycle Race won by J. Foxley Norris, Pioneer Bicycle Club'. Other views include a group of about four men touring along the West Coast Road, and notable buildings in Christchurch and Dunedin. One image shows the "cage" crossing the Teremakau River. Description: `Not beyond Redemption' by George Davies is a biography of Captain John Guard describing his early life in London, time in Newgate prison, work as a convict transportee, sealer, sea-captain and whaler based at Kakapo Bay in Port Underwood working between New Zealand and Sydney. John and Betty Guard and their two children were onboard the Harriet when it was wrecked off the Taranaki coast in 1834 and the biography details the subsequent experiences of the Guard family and the role the Alligator played in this incident, finishing with the subsequent farming career of John Guard at Kakapo Bay. Description: A silver New Zealand Cross suspended on a purple ribbon. The obverse shows gold stars and a gold wreath around the central circular boss, a gold crown on the upright arm of the cross, and gold laurel leaves on the bar to which the ribbon was sewn. The reverse is inscribed: "Lieut Gilbert Mair, Rotorua 1870, N.Z.M." Inscriptions: Verso - centre - Lieut Gilbert Mair, Rotorua [1870] N.Z.M. Quantity: 1 curio(s). Physical Description: Silver medal and bar 75 x 40 mm, suspended from purple ribbon, total dimensions 115 x 40 mm, in red leather case 150 x 82 x 30 mm, lined with violet velvet. Provenance: The medal was awarded on 1 April 1886, for Mair's action in combatting troops of Te Kooti near Rotorua in February 1870. The medal was previously displayed in a cabinet in a publicly accessible room at Turnbull House. After being missing for about 35 years, it was returned anonymously to Te Papa in March 2006; staff there recognised it as having previously belonged to the Alexander Turnbull Library. See newsclipping from Dominion Sunday Times, 13 October 1991, discussing the loss. Housed with packaging in which the medal was returned to the Library in March 2006. During its absence from the Library, the date "1870" on the reverse has been partially scratched out. Black and white photo negative 1/2-002631 shows the inscription intact.
