Description: Outward letter book containing 153 numbered and dated copies of despatches to the Colonial Secretary of New South Wales. List of despatches at front of volume. On pages at the rear of the volume are found census for Bay of Islands, Hokianga and other European settlements circa 1836-1839, together with hand-drawn charts of Tauranga, Maketu, Manukau and Kaipara harbours. Pages between 489 and 518 contain the census information for: Hokianga 1838 (names of the Europeans Resident on the ‘Hokianga’); the census list of "Church mission" for [Tipiuna?], Keri keri, Waimate,Pahia; principal chiefs in the Hokianga and Kaipara (name of the principal chiefs, ‘Hokianga’); First District (North Cape to Whangaroa), February 1836; Second District (Whangaroa), February 1836; Third District (Bay of Islands), February 1836; Fourth District (Hokianga), February 1836; Fifth District (all places south of the Bay of Islands and Hokianga, including Middle Island), February 1836. Pages 482 and 484 contain the chart of Maketu and Tauranga, and the W White's chart of Manukau. Pages 525 and 526 are Tirarau’s Chart of Kaipara and Wairoa; and pages 529 and 530 contain a chart of Kaipara. Physical Description: Holograph (37 cm; ½ brown morocco, brown boards in grey phase box) Provenance: Presentation label at front also indicates that item was "No. 594 National Historical Collection" Includes: chart of Tauranga and Maketu harbours; chart of Manukau Harbour by William White; chart of entrance to Kaipara Harbour by William White; Maori chart of Kaipara Harbour and Wairoa River by Tirarau, a Ngapuhi (or possibly Ngati Whatoa) chief; a possible copy of another chart of Kaipara Harbour, together with 3 pages of descriptions of harbours. Processing information: Addiitonal description of the census and charts within the volume was added to the record in October 2022 when the volume was digitised.
