Description: Diagrammatic map drawn on higher ground overlooking the scene where the HMS Buffalo navy ship was wrecked ('28th July 1840, at 10 am'). Map shows the site was wrecked, in a flat, sandy beach area, the thickly wooded hills behind it, the encampment of those who were in the wrecked ship, points on the beach where parts of the ship were washed ashore, and an area of flat marshy ground. Also depicted is the neighbouring pa site (maori village) of the Chief Teraroa, ('Teraroa's hippah'), the encampment of the part of the Buffalo's crew 'who were employed in the firest, preparing the cargo, Mercury River, part of Wiritianga's pa site, as well as Mr Brown's wharf-store and settlement ('Buffalo's store's were landed there'). Signature of creator on map but hard to distinguish. Appears to be ?T. Laslett. Shows several drawings of trees, buildings at Brown's settlement, navy tents. Description: Drawn on part of a cadastral map, the annotations highlight the Horotiu Parish, and identify James Grix' land as lot 130 (112 acres), the swamp on his land and neighbouring lot 129. Depicts three land reserves (one for the race course on lot 123a of 123 acres. Accompanying letter on Department of Lands and Survey, Wellington, written to the Chairman of Public Petitions Committee (A-L) by A. Barron, Under Secretary, addressing petition by James Grix, land owner of lot 130, requesting compensation for drainage expenses on the land. Letter written 21 April, 1895, letter number 27 117. Annotations around the map include: 'General Assembly Library' stamp; 'No. 219 - Jas Grix', 'S G 27 117', 'Spec. p. Drawings'. Several pencil annotations on reverse including 'why did they spend £320'. Description: Military map showing operations from the Auckland Fort Britomart Albert barracks, south along the military route to Cambridge, Aratitaha and Tokanui, Waikato District. Depicts military blockhouses, redoubts and forts (five in the Waikato region and over eleven in South Auckland), stockages, routes used on garrison duty only, engagements, Maori pa and kainga and the confiscation boundary as gazetted 17/12/1864 including the aukati (frontier) line. Also shows mission stations Waipa and Taupiri and geographical features, most with Maori placenames. Identifies battle sites at several places including Hairini (22.2.64), Rangiaohia (21.2.64) Kihikihi and Orakau (2.4.64), Waiari (11.2.64) and in South Auckland including Hills Clearing (8.9.63), Koheroa (17.7.63), Meremere (1.11.63). Several Maori pa and kainga are named, including Tokanui, Te Kopua, Otawhao, Otautahanga. In the Waikato regions a similar number of both redoubts and pa sites are identified. Description: Published by J. D. Wickham, [1879?], missing pages 93-94. Includes many annotations by Cowan, and loose papers including correspondence, clippings, drafts, and photographs. Also an image of Patara Te Tuhi, and a sketch map of the Waikato District tipped in to the back cover. Correspondence includes a letter from C. [Charles?] Garlick, of Taneatua, dated 31 January 1928; a letter from A. R. Weal, of Pukeatua, Te Awamutu, dated 20 February 1930, which contains information about Te Awamutu Troop, Waikato Cavalry, provided by his father T. Weal; and a letter by George Graham [signed also as Hori Kereama], of Auckland, dated 11 March 1942. Graham's letter includes discussion relating to the legal status of the Treaty of Waitangi, Māori participation in both World Wars, Kīngitanga, and Māori leadership. Also indicates 'Greenstone treasure reputed to be here', bridle path to Te Kuiti, Mokau River Tributary, Paewhenua and Citadel Rock. Annotations are in the surrounds of Mangaorongo, north of Rangitoto, south of Hikurangi and west of Otarewa. Shows the Waiari Pa, the military redoubt (fort) across the river (40th regiment), another redoubt with annotation 'afterwards camp', the Mangapiko river and Tauwhare Pa. Roads and numbered land blocks are mapped around the Waiari Pa and the river, numbered from 102-125 and 283-300 (not inclusive). The name 'Ford' is associated with a point on the river. One road leads to Te Rore, one to Te Piringia. A diagram labelled 'graves' is identified. Some red annotations on the map point to the river, to Ford's name, to section 124 named '?Parekuoa' (or 'Pare Kuoa). An illustrated piece of printed paper 4.5 x 4.5 cm has been subsequently attached to the map which reads 'View from Paterangi looking towards Mangapiko River and Mt. Kakepuku.' (Unknown source).
