Description: Map showing the East Cape, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Northern Hawkes Bay and just south of Taupo. Shows Te Kooti's approximate route, and direction (arrows on line) and his engagements with the Hauhau people. Stops at certain pa are dated, some added text (before photocopy) e.g. "Final escape to King Country", "Visit to Takangamutu". Key stops included Opape, Tologa Bay, Turanga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Pourere, Puketapu. The linking areas for all these points was the Urewera country. Te Kooti was a Rongowhakaata leader, military leader, prophet, religious founder, pursued by colonial forces, eventually took refuge in the King Country where Te Kooti remained until pardoned in 1883. Description: Topographic map of Kapiti Island with some described features and named vegetation. Includes the site of an anchorage adjacent to Motungarara Island and Kapiti Island. Ink blotches obliterate parts of the map Kapiti Island includes numerous Maori placenames and named streams. Pa sites and former Maori settlements are marked, as are whaling stations and a cavern, formerly a burial ground. Sites of mutton birds are marked as are water supplies, walking tracks, the site of an old homestead and old cultivations. Tokumapuna Island, 1.2.21 [acres] includes the site of the main whaling station and named rocks which are covered at high water are named. Description: Copy of topographic manuscript map of Kapiti Island, with cadastral and Māori historical information. Shows several pā sites, including Wharekahu Bay Pa, Taepiro Stream Pa, 'Rangitira Point Pa'. Shows land subdivisions, such as Maraetakaroro Kapiti No. 2, subdn 2B and Waiorua Kapiti no. 5, subdn 1B. Identifies Māori place names, the residence of Te Rauparaha and 'Rangihaieta' (Te Rangihaeata), the residence of Mr A S Wilkinson, whaling stations on surrounding islands. Beside the map are notes on early HMS ship visits to the island. Total area for the island is given as over 4855 acres. Annotation on map before copying: Sale plan W 35. It was formerly assumed that this map is a photocopy from the manuscript reproduced in 'The stirring times of Te Rauparaha (Chief of the Ngatitoa) / by W.T.L. Travers. Description: Ink and pencil annotations on partly hand coloured map (incomplete - only part blue colour and some red for proposed roads). The pencil annotations add crosses (population) and accidental orange brush stroke indicate draft copy. Map is hand coloured to a key that reads: 'Lines of road proposed to be made - red. Local position of Military settlements - red circles. Lines of road to be made at a future period - brown. The crosses (black) represent the distribution of the Native Population approximately each cross representing about 100 souls.' The military settlements are most dense in the Wanganui, South Taranaki, New Plymouth, Waipa, Waikato and South Waikato districts and north of the Manawatu River. No such settlements are identified around Wellington, Auckland, Napier or the East Coast north of Mahia. Quantity: 1 map(s). Description: Map is hand coloured and probably the manuscript to the later published editions. The key to the map (from later editions is) 'Lines of road proposed to be made - red. Local position of Military settlements - red circles. Lines of road to be made at a future period - brown. The crosses (black) represent the distribution of the Native Population approximately each cross representing about 100 souls.' However, this not written on this edition. The military settlements are most dense in the Wanganui, South Taranaki, New Plymouth, Waipa, Waikato and South Waikato districts and north of the Manawatu River. Description: Copy of an 1870 cadastral map of land blocks within the Manawatū-Wairarapa Block, from the Tararua Ranges eastwards to the Puketoi Range and Castle Point Block. Blocks indicate name, number and acreage, and include Kaihinu, Pahiatua, Te Pukahu, Mongorongo, Eketāhuna, Ngatapu, Ihuraua, Manawatū, Mangahauo, Puketoi, Tautane, Makure. Two blocks include note 'not passed the [Native Land] Court' (Kaihanga, Mangahao no. 3; 7,000 acres and Puketoi no. 6; 3,200 acres). Includes annotations such as the addition of Mangakao no. 2 block in 1881. Includes names of rivers, streams. Note on map reads: 'Produced before the N[ative] L[and] Court at Masterton Wairarapa September 7th 1871'. [Signed] J Rogan'.
