Description: Map showing the East Cape, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Northern Hawkes Bay and just south of Taupo. Shows Te Kooti's approximate route, and direction (arrows on line) and his engagements with the Hauhau people. Stops at certain pa are dated, some added text (before photocopy) e.g. "Final escape to King Country", "Visit to Takangamutu". Key stops included Opape, Tologa Bay, Turanga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Pourere, Puketapu. The linking areas for all these points was the Urewera country. Te Kooti was a Rongowhakaata leader, military leader, prophet, religious founder, pursued by colonial forces, eventually took refuge in the King Country where Te Kooti remained until pardoned in 1883. Description: Ink and pencil annotations on partly hand coloured map (incomplete - only part blue colour and some red for proposed roads). The pencil annotations add crosses (population) and accidental orange brush stroke indicate draft copy. Map is hand coloured to a key that reads: 'Lines of road proposed to be made - red. Local position of Military settlements - red circles. Lines of road to be made at a future period - brown. The crosses (black) represent the distribution of the Native Population approximately each cross representing about 100 souls.' The military settlements are most dense in the Wanganui, South Taranaki, New Plymouth, Waipa, Waikato and South Waikato districts and north of the Manawatu River. Description: Map is hand coloured and probably the manuscript to the later published editions. The key to the map (from later editions is) 'Lines of road proposed to be made - red. Local position of Military settlements - red circles. Lines of road to be made at a future period - brown. The crosses (black) represent the distribution of the Native Population approximately each cross representing about 100 souls.' However, this not written on this edition. The military settlements are most dense in the Wanganui, South Taranaki, New Plymouth, Waipa, Waikato and South Waikato districts and north of the Manawatu River. No such settlements are identified around Wellington, Auckland, Napier or the East Coast north of Mahia. Most populated areas are the East Cape, Whanganui River, Waikato district. Description: Copy of a manuscript sketch of an area covering what is now Tauranga and outskirts from Te Puna and Mount Maunganui down the Wairoa River to just south of Pye's Pa and Oropi. Shows various settlements, bush, redoubts (Hunters & Judea), Maori cultivation, swamps, tracks of 1st Waikato and 12th regiments, Gate Pa and an area of land marked as being given back to Maori. Description: Notebooks, correspondence, and papers relating to the history, geology and geography of the Napier-Taupo-Kaingaroa region, notes on Maori canoes, art and history, the moa, education, hydro-electricity, the Shakespearean controversy, his political beliefs, and other subjects. There are also land deeds and papers of W Howard Hill and William Colenso. Notebooks, correspondence, and papers on the history, geology, and geography of the Napier-Taupo-Kaingaroa region, notes on moa, Captain St George's diary, Shakespearean controversy, and other topics. Papers include notes and papers on geology, history of the Kaingaroa-Taupo area, Te Kooti campaign, and early history of New Zealand; correspondence from W Colenso to Mrs E Hill. Also journal for 1897 which deals largely with school inspecting in Hawke's Bay. Henry Thomas Hill was the Inspector for Schools for Hawke's Bay and the East Coast. Description: Military map showing operations from the Auckland Fort Britomart Albert barracks, south along the military route to Cambridge, Aratitaha and Tokanui, Waikato District. Depicts military blockhouses, redoubts and forts (five in the Waikato region and over eleven in South Auckland), stockages, routes used on garrison duty only, engagements, Maori pa and kainga and the confiscation boundary as gazetted 17/12/1864 including the aukati (frontier) line. Also shows mission stations Waipa and Taupiri and geographical features, most with Maori placenames. Identifies battle sites at several places including Hairini (22.2.64), Rangiaohia (21.2.64) Kihikihi and Orakau (2.4.64), Waiari (11.2.64) and in South Auckland including Hills Clearing (8.9.63), Koheroa (17.7.63), Meremere (1.11.63). Several Maori pa and kainga are named, including Tokanui, Te Kopua, Otawhao, Otautahanga. In the Waikato regions a similar number of both redoubts and pa sites are identified. Description: Manuscript sketchmap containing military information relating to the battle of Huirangi near Waitara during the first New Zealand War, Taranaki, depicting rifle pits, a peach grove, bush, the first redoubt with 100 men, the second redoubt with 100 men and guns, the Hairau Camp (spelt Hairoa, two and a half miles in a direct line from the Waitara Camp) and the signal station Matarikoriko with 100 men. Description: Map of the fortified Ohinemutu pa site, Rotorua, depicting Captain Main's redoubt. Shows 'Tiki' (carved gateway), stockades (two lines) and ditch surrounding three sides of the site, 'Paepae-mohoao' (old whares), 'Pukaki' (carved gateway), 'Maharo' (Captain Main's redoubt), 'Te Hina-a-Maui' (old kumara gardens), 'Te Pono' (sacred to the god Makawe), 'Hiraua' (covered with houses and kumara gardens), 'Pa-nui-o-marama' (carved gateway) near the Catholic Church; shows the position of '?Parapato'. The fourth side of the site is the Lake Rotorua. This map is comprised of two separate maps overlaid on each other. Description: This map covers the area from Maungatautari Mountain and the upper reaches of River Waikato to the mouth of the River Waihou entering the Firth of Thames, and including Tauranga Harbour. Settlements, pa, mountain ranges, rivers, streams and lakes are marked, as are numerous sites of fights accompanied by a record of numbers killed. The Te Aroha block is prominently shaded as are adjacent areas which appear to be jointly claimed by Ngatihaua and Ngaiterangi. Boundaries of other Maori land are marked by dotted lines, some of which are named as follows:- Ngatiraukawa lands, Ngatihaua lands, Ngaiterangi lands, Hauraki lands, Waikato lands. Limits of the scale of this map have been marked with red pencil to allow for changes in size during photocopying. The orientation of this map faces south. A similar copy of this map is located at the same classification and a cataloguing record can be found under the same title. Inscriptions: Recto - Produced before the Court, Auckland 21 January 1871. Description: Military map of the area from Tauranga Harbour to the East Cape and south to Whangawehi Stream, across to Lake Rotoaira. Lakes, rivers, streams, bays, islands and harbours are drawn, some of which are named. Includes hachures. A mission house is marked near Gisborne. Blockhouses, redoubts, engagements, Maori pas, kaingas and confiscation boundaries as gazetted are referred to in a key. A second key is given for marked routes and campaigns of Te Arawa and Ngatiporou. Campaigns against Te Kooti include names of commanding officers, places and dates of battles. Names include Colonel Whitmore, Mair and Preece, Hamlin and Witty, Lambert, Deighton and Herrick. Te Kooti's routes are marked. Description: The sketch of the Patea district extends from the Kaupokonui Stream on the Waimate Plain to the Patea River which includes areas of military settlements and Native Reserves. Settlements, tracks, a redoubt, a camp and an old mission station, rivers and Gent. Chute's Track is named. Includes the name of Bradshaw, possibly at the site of his house. Te Ngatu o Te Manu is now a park area situated between the Kapuni and Inaha Stream in the Taranaki Region. The sketch shows the clearings of Te Maru and Te Ngatu o Te Manu in an area of heavy bush with a track between the two places and passing through an unnamed cleared area. Within the clearing of Te Maru is Ouru Creek and the track to the settlement of Te Ngatu o Te Manu which includes sites of buildings, sites of three clearings, a whare, tracks, two of which are named 'Track to Te Kauae' and 'To Ruaaruru'. Some clearings include notes stating 'with burnt stumps and felled trees'. Another sketch showing Te Ngutu o te Manu and Te Maru clearings = MapColl-832.2hkm/[ca.1868]/Acc.1926 is the duplicate copy. The second copy of this map is not linen backed. Catalogue card states that Charles Heaphy drew these maps. No authority for this information given. Handwritten note states 'S.P. Smith in diary 29 October 1866 states he was asked by Governor Grey to make a map of this area. This is probably his'. Description: Hand drawn military map of the area from Tauranga to the Waiapu River, south to Poverty Bay, across to Lake Taupo. Lakes, mountains, rivers, islands, bays, points and harbours are drawn, some of which are named, as are some settlements. Includes tracks, some of which are described as 'Te Kooti's trail' and 'Mair's pursuit of Te Kooti'. Battle sites are prominently marked, named and dated. A note written adjacent to several battle positions state that these cannot accurately be determined. Title handwritten in pencil along the top of the map. Quantity: 1 manuscript map(s).
