Description: Interior view of Kawiti's Pa at Ruapekapeka includes his house and pallisade, and several unnamed houses. Two wells are labelled, while the ditches, embankments and gateways are not. A reference key identifies the areas destroyed by artillery as well as the positions of the flagstaff. Four diagrams surround the plan: elevation of palisades; bomb proof hole; section of a hut and an underground passage and cave. A larger diagram shows a cross-section view of the pa showing the position of the breach and underground bomb proof chambers. Compare to lithograph held in Drawings and Prints E-320-f-003 and MapColl-832.11hkm/1846/Acc.29011. Map has manuscript annotations. On the rear of the map is handwritten "Captured under Sir George Grey Govenor, January 11th 1846, 12 English killed and 30 wounded. Description: Plan of Hone Heke's pa at Ohaeawai in the Far North District, Northland shows sites of the flagstaff, Kawiti's house, houses underground, heaps of potatoes and indian corn, pits underground covered with plants and earth, Nos. 1 & 2 - nine pounder guns, No. 3 - six pounder cannonade, c&d - points of attack, a&b - sections taken, are referred to in a key. Doors in the outer fence are marked and the principal place of egress and congress. Positions and distances of a camp and batteries around the pa are marked, also numbers of soldiers. Names include Major Bridge, Lt. Phillpotts, Major McPherson, Lt. Col. Hulme. A sketch on the left of the map is of the pallisade. Notes refer to the inner and outer pallisade with detailed information about the heights and thicknesses of the posts. The sketch on the right of the map is of a Maori wearing a cape, who appears to be using a blow pipe which projects through a section of the front face of the pallisade. Description: Military map showing operations from the Auckland Fort Britomart Albert barracks, south along the military route to Cambridge, Aratitaha and Tokanui, Waikato District. Depicts military blockhouses, redoubts and forts (five in the Waikato region and over eleven in South Auckland), stockages, routes used on garrison duty only, engagements, Maori pa and kainga and the confiscation boundary as gazetted 17/12/1864 including the aukati (frontier) line. Also shows mission stations Waipa and Taupiri and geographical features, most with Maori placenames. Identifies battle sites at several places including Hairini (22.2.64), Rangiaohia (21.2.64) Kihikihi and Orakau (2.4.64), Waiari (11.2.64) and in South Auckland including Hills Clearing (8.9.63), Koheroa (17.7.63), Meremere (1.11.63). Several Maori pa and kainga are named, including Tokanui, Te Kopua, Otawhao, Otautahanga. In the Waikato regions a similar number of both redoubts and pa sites are identified. Description: Map of the fortified Ohinemutu pa site, Rotorua, depicting Captain Main's redoubt. Shows 'Tiki' (carved gateway), stockades (two lines) and ditch surrounding three sides of the site, 'Paepae-mohoao' (old whares), 'Pukaki' (carved gateway), 'Maharo' (Captain Main's redoubt), 'Te Hina-a-Maui' (old kumara gardens), 'Te Pono' (sacred to the god Makawe), 'Hiraua' (covered with houses and kumara gardens), 'Pa-nui-o-marama' (carved gateway) near the Catholic Church; shows the position of '?Parapato'. The fourth side of the site is the Lake Rotorua. This map is comprised of two separate maps overlaid on each other. One is in ink and outlines the traditional positions within the pa site (as well as Captain Main's redoubt). Description: Sheet 2 of Aerial plan 791 is of the Ruapekapeka Pa in the Far North District. The drawings are believed to be a study of an archaeolgical site in use in 1846. Contour lines include height in feet. An inset locality map, situated bottom right of the main map, shows the location of the Pa in relation to named roads, some streams and the railway line. Reference notes refer to the Geodetic Grid - 1949, and Photography - survey 3028, date 6.2.68, negative scale 1:2900 (approx.). Latitude and longitude coordinates are included. Inset: The aerial plan includes a locality diagram with a scale of 1 inch to a mile, situated bottom right, below the main plan. Description: Military map of the area from Hokianga Harbour, including Doubtless Bay and Omapare Lake to the Bay of Islands during the New zealand war of 1843-1847. Shows route taken by first military expedition from the Bay of Islands to Tarrawahanua Pa along a native route, and to may and June battle sites. Shows changing postions of Heke Pokai's pa sites wher battles took place. Settlements and pa sites are named, as are bays, rivers, heads. Includes tracks from pa sites, cut roads and horse roads and a cart road. Routes taken by troops under the command of Lt. Col. Hulme are marked. An inset shows the plan of Heke's Pa with strategic positions of a camp and two sites of gun batteries on 1st July 1845, one includes native 'allies' and Walker's party. A caption above the inset drawing states that there is a slight elevation between the battery and the pa so that shot cannot strike close to the ground. Description: Hand drawn military map of the area from the Waimapu River, including the Tauranga-Rotorua Road to Okauia, Irihanga, Wairoa River and Tauranga Harbour. Includes roads and tracks, one of which is marked as 'my scouting track - there and back close on forty miles'. Gate Pa is marked, settlements, rivers and some roads are named. Scenes of action are marked as crossed swords and some battle sites are named - Gate Pa, Te Ranga, Oropi, Waehi, Whakamarama. Directional arrows point to Rotorua and Okauia. Includes some hachures, sites of clearings and a location of a house. Title partly taken from the pencilled heading, believed to have been added at a later date, and the catalogue card.
