Description: Probably a diazo copy of MapColl 832.14hkm/1864/Acc.37093 which is a hand drawn map of Orakau Pa, copied with some minor changes, from an original of the same title, which details the position of British troops in the battle and the line of retreat from the pa. Names of regiments and commanding officers are given at various locations approaching the pa, some having the date of 2nd April. An area labelled 'Headquarters 2 guns' is marked and the military term 'Picquet' locates two places on the map. Includes a plantation, reserve, Ti Tree and Raupo Swamps and contour lines. A reference key indicates parapets, banquettes, ditches and whares [sic]. Three plans, inset and with a different scale to the area map, are of the pa with its approach and two cross sectional views, labelled A-B and C-D. Description: Plan of Hone Heke's pa at Ohaeawai in the Far North District, Northland shows sites of the flagstaff, Kawiti's house, houses underground, heaps of potatoes and indian corn, pits underground covered with plants and earth, Nos. 1 & 2 - nine pounder guns, No. 3 - six pounder cannonade, c&d - points of attack, a&b - sections taken, are referred to in a key. Doors in the outer fence are marked and the principal place of egress and congress. Positions and distances of a camp and batteries around the pa are marked, also numbers of soldiers. Names include Major Bridge, Lt. Phillpotts, Major McPherson, Lt. Col. Hulme. A sketch on the left of the map is of the pallisade. Notes refer to the inner and outer pallisade with detailed information about the heights and thicknesses of the posts. The sketch on the right of the map is of a Maori wearing a cape, who appears to be using a blow pipe which projects through a section of the front face of the pallisade. Description: Drawn on a published map, handwritten annotations depict two Te Kooti pa sites (his old pa and his bush pa), an old battlefield, a burial ground, old cultivation, Titkoki trenches, the'Fairy Army', and the Turimoa lookout. Also indicates 'Greenstone treasure reputed to be here', bridle path to Te Kuiti, Mokau River Tributary, Paewhenua and Citadel Rock. Annotations are in the surrounds of Mangaorongo, north of Rangitoto, south of Hikurangi and west of Otarewa. Description: Military map of the area from Tauranga Harbour to the East Cape and south to Whangawehi Stream, across to Lake Rotoaira. Lakes, rivers, streams, bays, islands and harbours are drawn, some of which are named. Includes hachures. A mission house is marked near Gisborne. Blockhouses, redoubts, engagements, Maori pas, kaingas and confiscation boundaries as gazetted are referred to in a key. A second key is given for marked routes and campaigns of Te Arawa and Ngatiporou. Campaigns against Te Kooti include names of commanding officers, places and dates of battles. Names include Colonel Whitmore, Mair and Preece, Hamlin and Witty, Lambert, Deighton and Herrick. Te Kooti's routes are marked. Description: Military map of the area from Hokianga Harbour, including Doubtless Bay and Omapare Lake to the Bay of Islands during the New zealand war of 1843-1847. Shows route taken by first military expedition from the Bay of Islands to Tarrawahanua Pa along a native route, and to may and June battle sites. Shows changing postions of Heke Pokai's pa sites wher battles took place. Settlements and pa sites are named, as are bays, rivers, heads. Includes tracks from pa sites, cut roads and horse roads and a cart road. Routes taken by troops under the command of Lt. Col. Hulme are marked. An inset shows the plan of Heke's Pa with strategic positions of a camp and two sites of gun batteries on 1st July 1845, one includes native 'allies' and Walker's party. A caption above the inset drawing states that there is a slight elevation between the battery and the pa so that shot cannot strike close to the ground. Includes tracks, some of which are described as 'Te Kooti's trail' and 'Mair's pursuit of Te Kooti'. Battle sites are prominently marked, named and dated. Description: Plots the Hauhau campaign and Te Kooti campaign from the New Zealand Wars. Shows central North Island and note reads "Land enclosed by yellow is that of the Maori King, boarded by the 'aukati' no European may cross on pain of death". Military engagements and massacres are identified across the map. Massacres are identified at Matawhero, Ohiwa Harbour, Whitecliffs and Waihi. Engagements are identified at Mohaka, Ngaatape, Puketapu, Turanga and Ahikerera Pa on the East Coast and Whakatane districts, and Rauparoa Pa, Otatau, Otoia, Wairou, Moturoa, Ruapuru and Te Ngutu o te Mana (identified as Tito Kowaru's own place). Shows "Nukumaru Pah taken 2 Feb 69". Orange lines represent Colonel Whitmore campaigns eg Campaign of Ngatapa Dec/Jan 1869 (Poverty Bay area), or Oct/Nov 1868 Whanganui area, April/ May 1869 Bay of Plenty area. Description: Hand drawn map of Orakau Pa detailing the position of British troops in the battle, a sap, the line of retreat from the pa and the line of relieving enemy 900 yards across swamp. The names of commanding officers and HQ, 40th are given at various locations approaching the pa. An area labelled 'Headquarters and guard - subsequently Blockhouse', the site of 2 guns, and the military term 'Picquet' locates two places on the map. Descriptions of the swamps around the pa are included. Kariponia, two sites of 30 graves and one of 40 buried, and the spot where Captain Ring was killed are all marked. The site of a Maori church, school and cemetery are prominently marked, and the distance to the Puniu River. Also, hand drawn in pencil in the bottom right corner at a much later date, is a plan of the external walls of Orakau Pa and its approaches. The gate, fences, sap and compass directions are noted, as well as descriptions of the vegetation, sites of battles. The Kihikihi Road has been drawn in red ink over the top of the original map. A pencilled note at the location of the Maori church states 'large raupo church here - Rev. Morgan.'.
