Description: Map showing the East Cape, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Northern Hawkes Bay and just south of Taupo. Shows Te Kooti's approximate route, and direction (arrows on line) and his engagements with the Hauhau people. Stops at certain pa are dated, some added text (before photocopy) e.g. "Final escape to King Country", "Visit to Takangamutu". Key stops included Opape, Tologa Bay, Turanga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Pourere, Puketapu. The linking areas for all these points was the Urewera country. Te Kooti was a Rongowhakaata leader, military leader, prophet, religious founder, pursued by colonial forces, eventually took refuge in the King Country where Te Kooti remained until pardoned in 1883. Description: Military map showing operations from the Auckland Fort Britomart Albert barracks, south along the military route to Cambridge, Aratitaha and Tokanui, Waikato District. Depicts military blockhouses, redoubts and forts (five in the Waikato region and over eleven in South Auckland), stockages, routes used on garrison duty only, engagements, Maori pa and kainga and the confiscation boundary as gazetted 17/12/1864 including the aukati (frontier) line. Also shows mission stations Waipa and Taupiri and geographical features, most with Maori placenames. Identifies battle sites at several places including Hairini (22.2.64), Rangiaohia (21.2.64) Kihikihi and Orakau (2.4.64), Waiari (11.2.64) and in South Auckland including Hills Clearing (8.9.63), Koheroa (17.7.63), Meremere (1.11.63). Several Maori pa and kainga are named, including Tokanui, Te Kopua, Otawhao, Otautahanga. In the Waikato regions a similar number of both redoubts and pa sites are identified. Description: Map of the fortified Ohinemutu pa site, Rotorua, depicting Captain Main's redoubt. Shows 'Tiki' (carved gateway), stockades (two lines) and ditch surrounding three sides of the site, 'Paepae-mohoao' (old whares), 'Pukaki' (carved gateway), 'Maharo' (Captain Main's redoubt), 'Te Hina-a-Maui' (old kumara gardens), 'Te Pono' (sacred to the god Makawe), 'Hiraua' (covered with houses and kumara gardens), 'Pa-nui-o-marama' (carved gateway) near the Catholic Church; shows the position of '?Parapato'. The fourth side of the site is the Lake Rotorua. This map is comprised of two separate maps overlaid on each other. Lakes, rivers, streams, bays, islands and harbours are drawn, some of which are named. Includes hachures. A mission house is marked near Gisborne. Blockhouses, redoubts, engagements, Maori pas, kaingas and confiscation boundaries as gazetted are referred to in a key. A second key is given for marked routes and campaigns of Te Arawa and Ngatiporou. Campaigns against Te Kooti include names of commanding officers, places and dates of battles. Description: Hand drawn military map of the area from Tauranga to the Waiapu River, south to Poverty Bay, across to Lake Taupo. Lakes, mountains, rivers, islands, bays, points and harbours are drawn, some of which are named, as are some settlements. Includes tracks, some of which are described as 'Te Kooti's trail' and 'Mair's pursuit of Te Kooti'. Battle sites are prominently marked, named and dated. A note written adjacent to several battle positions state that these cannot accurately be determined. Title handwritten in pencil along the top of the map. Quantity: 1 manuscript map(s). Includes roads and tracks, one of which is marked as 'my scouting track - there and back close on forty miles'. Gate Pa is marked, settlements, rivers and some roads are named. Scenes of action are marked as crossed swords and some battle sites are named - Gate Pa, Te Ranga, Oropi, Waehi, Whakamarama. Directional arrows point to Rotorua and Okauia. Includes some hachures, sites of clearings and a location of a house. Title partly taken from the pencilled heading, believed to have been added at a later date, and the catalogue card.
