Description: Map of Porirua Harbour, Titahi Bay northwards to Pukerua Bay, and the Horokiwi Valley, Wellington. Shows unnumbered subdivisions of land around the Harbour, Jackson's Hotel, Thom's Hotel and whaling station. Shows several Maori pa sites, including Pa Warakoua on the southwest side of the Harbour, an unnamed pa near Titahi Bay, Taupo Pa and surrounding Native gardens, the Native path from Taupo Pa to Pukerua, Wairaka Pa near Gibralter Rock, and a settlement at Pukerua. Map probably drawn in 1844 or 1845, according to Drawing and Prints. Also shows several numbered views that relate to sketches housed in Drawings and Prints. Note on map before copying: Portfolio D, [New Zealand Company], marked & 4 by ? Description: Hydrographic sketch of safe anchorage on the southeastern coast of Kapiti Island, including Tokomapuna Island and Motungarara and Tahoramorea Islands (named on the map Evan's Island - Whaling Station, Hiko's Island and Raupero's Island). Shows soundings and Rangatira Point. Other Titles - Charles Written on map: 'Copied from a MS [manuscript] belonging to the New Zealand Company April 3rd, 1847'. Written on map: 'This is a convenient anchorage for vessels bound for Port Nicholson, should they be caught by southerly winds in the narrows of Cook Strait...' The description goes on to explain a safe approach to between Kapiti and Port Nicholson and also from Kapiti to the Whanganui River. Description: The sketch of the Patea district extends from the Kaupokonui Stream on the Waimate Plain to the Patea River which includes areas of military settlements and Native Reserves. Settlements, tracks, a redoubt, a camp and an old mission station, rivers and Gent. Chute's Track is named. Includes the name of Bradshaw, possibly at the site of his house. Te Ngatu o Te Manu is now a park area situated between the Kapuni and Inaha Stream in the Taranaki Region. The sketch shows the clearings of Te Maru and Te Ngatu o Te Manu in an area of heavy bush with a track between the two places and passing through an unnamed cleared area. Within the clearing of Te Maru is Ouru Creek and the track to the settlement of Te Ngatu o Te Manu which includes sites of buildings, sites of three clearings, a whare, tracks, two of which are named 'Track to Te Kauae' and 'To Ruaaruru'. Some clearings include notes stating 'with burnt stumps and felled trees'. Another sketch showing Te Ngutu o te Manu and Te Maru clearings = MapColl-832.2hkm/[ca.1868]/Acc.1926 is the duplicate copy. The second copy of this map is not linen backed. Catalogue card states that Charles Heaphy drew these maps. No authority for this information given. Handwritten note states 'S.P. Smith in diary 29 October 1866 states he was asked by Governor Grey to make a map of this area. This is probably his'. Description: Topographical, exploratory map of the western part of the North Island from Taranaki southwards to Wellington, Cook Stait, and the northern part of the South Island, to Hokitika and Banks Peninsula. Shows the Taranaki, Wellington, Tasman, Nelson and Marlborough regions, with placenames, contours, coloured shading and some nautical information. Includes detailed notes about the exploration at the bottom of the map, however this text is not legible. Description: Cadastral map of the entrance of Kaipara Harbour, from the Waionui Inlet, Papakanui Spit, South Head down to Mairetahi. Several placenames are given along the eastern coastline, Kawau, Pararaha, Waipiro, Haratai, Te Pua, Waioneke, Onumotu, Taumata, Karukanihui. Four areas are highlighted and their acreage given: Okaka (1851), Whiritoa (1558), Waioneke (5500), and Mairetahi (6300). Both the Okara block and the Whiritoa block have small designated Native reserves, marked 'N.R.' Pencil note at bottom of map 'By Chas Heaphy?' Description: Map of Porirua Harbour, Paramata, Plimmerton and Pukerua districts with Mana Island. Location of several pa sites indicated: Wairaka Pa near Pukerua Bay; Taupo Pa (built 1844) at Plimmerton, Warakoua Pa on Porirua Harbour's North shore, and a pa at Titahi Bay. Also shows location of Jackson's Hotel, Thom's hotel and whaling station, Maori gardens beyond Taupo pa and Maori path to Pukerua Bay. Subdivisions of land are indicated around Porirua Harbour. Attributed to Charles Heaphy until 1993, because sketches referred to in title were thought to be Heaphy's. Reattribution to Brees because 1. Brees was Principal surveyor for the N.Z.Company and the map shows land subdivisions. 2. Handwriting very similar to Brees' on MS map held by the Admiralty (photo held by Cartographic Collection (823 at / 1844-5 / acc 855) 3. Indications of points of view of sketches can mostly be linked with known originals by Brees. The following list gives the numbers on this map followed by titles and plate numbers of the matching illustration from Brees' Pictorial Illustrations of New Zealand (London, 1847). No.21 [i.e. no. 1 or 2?] = Porirua Harbour no. 35, described as looking towards the north from near Jackson's towards Thom's. No.3. Thom's whaling station, Porerua, no.14. No.4.
