Description: Map showing the East Cape, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Northern Hawkes Bay and just south of Taupo. Shows Te Kooti's approximate route, and direction (arrows on line) and his engagements with the Hauhau people. Stops at certain pa are dated, some added text (before photocopy) e.g. "Final escape to King Country", "Visit to Takangamutu". Key stops included Opape, Tologa Bay, Turanga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Pourere, Puketapu. The linking areas for all these points was the Urewera country. Te Kooti was a Rongowhakaata leader, military leader, prophet, religious founder, pursued by colonial forces, eventually took refuge in the King Country where Te Kooti remained until pardoned in 1883. Description: Cadastral map depicting properties, some highlighted in brown and some pink, along the Wairoa River and westward, north of the Tauranga-Waihi Main Road, the total amount of land totalling over 900 acres. Description: A collection of map information from various sources from 1858-1892. The maps no. 1-6 and 8 contain information from Native Land Court plans of the 1880's, Survey Office road plans, Lands and Survey's first amendment (Mr Cussen's topographical survey), a map by S. Percy Smith, and the Sub-Atlas committee. The information has been added in different pens and hand writing eg "Plan marked from Hokianga" or "no track here shown by Mr Cussen". The map marked no. 7 shows military information from the New Zealand wars eg "Troops to be sent to Waikaremoana via Ahikereru - Ruatahuna Huiarau from Taupo". Shows some native tracks eg "from Heruiwi" and corrections or previous omissions. Map no. 9 shows tracks on N.L.C. plans, one of which "is away at the Court". The maps show very little signs of any settlement, except No. 3 and 6 "Tapuaeharuru Pa" and "Te Pueto Stn". A mission station, a native settlement and a school are also indicated. The maps cover the region from Hokianga, Kawhia Harbour, Mokau River, Waikato River, Tirau, Taupo to Rotorua on maps 1-6, 8 and Rotorua to Waikaremoana to Poverty Bay on maps 7 and [9]. All maps depict rivers. Map 7 and [9] are maps with annotations. They are on the published base map "Four-mile sheet, No. 10" (Wellington, New Zealand Lands and Surveys, 1935). Description: Map of the fortified Ohinemutu pa site, Rotorua, depicting Captain Main's redoubt. Shows 'Tiki' (carved gateway), stockades (two lines) and ditch surrounding three sides of the site, 'Paepae-mohoao' (old whares), 'Pukaki' (carved gateway), 'Maharo' (Captain Main's redoubt), 'Te Hina-a-Maui' (old kumara gardens), 'Te Pono' (sacred to the god Makawe), 'Hiraua' (covered with houses and kumara gardens), 'Pa-nui-o-marama' (carved gateway) near the Catholic Church; shows the position of '?Parapato'. The fourth side of the site is the Lake Rotorua. This map is comprised of two separate maps overlaid on each other. One is in ink and outlines the traditional positions within the pa site (as well as Captain Main's redoubt). Also an image of Patara Te Tuhi, and a sketch map of the Waikato District tipped in to the back cover. Correspondence includes a letter from C. [Charles?] Garlick, of Taneatua, dated 31 January 1928; a letter from A. R. Weal, of Pukeatua, Te Awamutu, dated 20 February 1930, which contains information about Te Awamutu Troop, Waikato Cavalry, provided by his father T. Weal; and a letter by George Graham [signed also as Hori Kereama], of Auckland, dated 11 March 1942. Graham's letter includes discussion relating to the legal status of the Treaty of Waitangi, Māori participation in both World Wars, Kīngitanga, and Māori leadership. Description: This map covers the area from Maungatautari Mountain and the upper reaches of River Waikato to the mouth of the River Waihou entering the Firth of Thames, and including Tauranga Harbour. Settlements, pa, mountain ranges, rivers, streams and lakes are marked, as are numerous sites of fights accompanied by a record of numbers killed. The Te Aroha block is prominently shaded as are adjacent areas which appear to be jointly claimed by Ngatihaua and Ngaiterangi. Boundaries of other Maori land are marked by dotted lines, some of which are named as follows:- Ngatiraukawa lands, Ngatihaua lands, Ngaiterangi lands, Hauraki lands, Waikato lands. Limits of the scale of this map have been marked with red pencil to allow for changes in size during photocopying. The orientation of this map faces south. Description: Military map of the area from Tauranga Harbour to the East Cape and south to Whangawehi Stream, across to Lake Rotoaira. Lakes, rivers, streams, bays, islands and harbours are drawn, some of which are named. Includes hachures. A mission house is marked near Gisborne. Blockhouses, redoubts, engagements, Maori pas, kaingas and confiscation boundaries as gazetted are referred to in a key. A second key is given for marked routes and campaigns of Te Arawa and Ngatiporou. Campaigns against Te Kooti include names of commanding officers, places and dates of battles. Names include Colonel Whitmore, Mair and Preece, Hamlin and Witty, Lambert, Deighton and Herrick. Te Kooti's routes are marked. Description: A hydrographic chart sketching the entrance of the Tauranga Harbour, depicting the path of the ship 'Fanny', around Mount Maunganui and Waikouai, with full sounding information. Identifies fortified pa site named 'Tumaitai Pa', the accompanying diagram depicts six whare or houses, and two tree-like storage huts. On the other side of the water, text reads 'the chief of this place anutra (sic)'; text on water reads 'going to Tomonalap (sic) Pa'. Denotes several sentences of text on geographical features, hydrographic detail and information on safe entrance and exit to the harbour. Catalogue card: 'Made by Thomas Wing in the schooner Fanny. Description: Manuscript map, with Maori only text, depicting Lake Rotorua, and lakes Rotoiti, Rotoehu, and Rotoma; several Maori tracks in the region. It specifies land beonging to Ngati Pikiao, Ngati Awa, Ngati Rangiteaorere, Ngati Whakaue, Ngati Rangiwewehi and Nga i Terangi. Other land belongs to Tarawhai, Uenukukopako, Tapuika, Kawerau, Tuwhare and Tarawhai. Maori tracks are named Paritangi, Tikipuna, Tearataukanihi, Tekaharoa, Tetahuna.
