Description: Map showing the East Cape, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Northern Hawkes Bay and just south of Taupo. Shows Te Kooti's approximate route, and direction (arrows on line) and his engagements with the Hauhau people. Stops at certain pa are dated, some added text (before photocopy) e.g. "Final escape to King Country", "Visit to Takangamutu". Key stops included Opape, Tologa Bay, Turanga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Pourere, Puketapu. The linking areas for all these points was the Urewera country. Te Kooti was a Rongowhakaata leader, military leader, prophet, religious founder, pursued by colonial forces, eventually took refuge in the King Country where Te Kooti remained until pardoned in 1883. Description: Cadastral map depicting properties, some highlighted in brown and some pink, along the Wairoa River and westward, north of the Tauranga-Waihi Main Road, the total amount of land totalling over 900 acres. Also depicted is the Te Puna Parish, the Tauranga township and two warves, Greerton, Waikareao and Waimapu. Four properties of 50 acres each are coloured pink, five properties of between 50 and 317 acres are coloured brown. No distinction given as to which properties are Miss Henry's. Description: Manuscript map from Tauranga Harbour, showing Greerton, south along the Waimapu Stream, south to Otane Wainuku, showing road (or track) from Noawato to Te Puke, and from the harbour to Te Puke, from Tauranga through Greerton and south to Noawato and onwards towards Rotorua and a road or track that extends from Greerton and runs parallel to the Waimapu Stream. Also depicts a forest reserve, heavy rimu area, and suggested tramway route from the route in Whakamapama north to the stream. There are also land deeds and papers of W Howard Hill and William Colenso. Notebooks, correspondence, and papers on the history, geology, and geography of the Napier-Taupo-Kaingaroa region, notes on moa, Captain St George's diary, Shakespearean controversy, and other topics. Papers include notes and papers on geology, history of the Kaingaroa-Taupo area, Te Kooti campaign, and early history of New Zealand; correspondence from W Colenso to Mrs E Hill. Also journal for 1897 which deals largely with school inspecting in Hawke's Bay. Henry Thomas Hill was the Inspector for Schools for Hawke's Bay and the East Coast. Description: Hand drawn early map of the North Island, with names predominantly clustered in North Auckland and the East Cape. The map says "No natives along this [the lower East Coast] coast as far as Ahuriri". Text (several handwritten paragraphs) under the map discusses church delineations over the Island congregation numbers in various areas eg "Congregation will be found at every principal point". Also "East Cape is occupied by our Native teachers, and the congregations are upwards of 1200"; "Waikato is diveded between us and the Wesleyans". The notes divide the North Island into 14 districts. Description: A collection of map information from various sources from 1858-1892. The maps no. 1-6 and 8 contain information from Native Land Court plans of the 1880's, Survey Office road plans, Lands and Survey's first amendment (Mr Cussen's topographical survey), a map by S. Percy Smith, and the Sub-Atlas committee. The information has been added in different pens and hand writing eg "Plan marked from Hokianga" or "no track here shown by Mr Cussen". The map marked no. 7 shows military information from the New Zealand wars eg "Troops to be sent to Waikaremoana via Ahikereru - Ruatahuna Huiarau from Taupo". Shows some native tracks eg "from Heruiwi" and corrections or previous omissions. Map no. 9 shows tracks on N.L.C. plans, one of which "is away at the Court". The maps show very little signs of any settlement, except No. 3 and 6 "Tapuaeharuru Pa" and "Te Pueto Stn". A mission station, a native settlement and a school are also indicated. The maps cover the region from Hokianga, Kawhia Harbour, Mokau River, Waikato River, Tirau, Taupo to Rotorua on maps 1-6, 8 and Rotorua to Waikaremoana to Poverty Bay on maps 7 and [9]. All maps depict rivers. Map 7 and [9] are maps with annotations. They are on the published base map "Four-mile sheet, No. 10" (Wellington, New Zealand Lands and Surveys, 1935). Description: Published by J. D. Wickham, [1879?], missing pages 93-94. Includes many annotations by Cowan, and loose papers including correspondence, clippings, drafts, and photographs. Also an image of Patara Te Tuhi, and a sketch map of the Waikato District tipped in to the back cover. Correspondence includes a letter from C. [Charles?] Garlick, of Taneatua, dated 31 January 1928; a letter from A. R. Weal, of Pukeatua, Te Awamutu, dated 20 February 1930, which contains information about Te Awamutu Troop, Waikato Cavalry, provided by his father T. Weal; and a letter by George Graham [signed also as Hori Kereama], of Auckland, dated 11 March 1942. Graham's letter includes discussion relating to the legal status of the Treaty of Waitangi, Māori participation in both World Wars, Kīngitanga, and Māori leadership. A small section of the old road is shown. The second plan (MapColl-832.45gmbd/1876/Acc.29312) shows a more detailed version of the survey, from the beginning of the new road, past the Abbots Creek and bridge. States that contents of road 1 rood 2.6 perches; includes letters JVTLES. Both maps have note: 'District Engineers Office Masterton 25.8.[18]76'. Acc.29311 has ink annotation '497' next to the path of the old road. Includes two letters, one to the Principal Secretarys Office (MapColl-832.45gmbd/1876/Acc.29314) requesting a conveyance for land and a second (MapColl-832.45bmbd/1876/Acc.29313) from the Engineer to the Wellington Superintendant regarding purchase of land for the new road from Josiah Viles, butcher, Featherston for £60.
