Description: Map showing the East Cape, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Northern Hawkes Bay and just south of Taupo. Shows Te Kooti's approximate route, and direction (arrows on line) and his engagements with the Hauhau people. Stops at certain pa are dated, some added text (before photocopy) e.g. "Final escape to King Country", "Visit to Takangamutu". Key stops included Opape, Tologa Bay, Turanga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Pourere, Puketapu. The linking areas for all these points was the Urewera country. Te Kooti was a Rongowhakaata leader, military leader, prophet, religious founder, pursued by colonial forces, eventually took refuge in the King Country where Te Kooti remained until pardoned in 1883. Description: Hand drawn map by William L. Williams, missionary, showing historical sites in the area from Whareongaonga, including Poverty Bay, to the Wharekopai Creek and Waikohu and Waipaoa Rivers. Includes named settlements, a depot, a redoubt and a pa site dated 1865, near Waerengahika. Battle sites are referred to in historical notes. Dotted lines show the boundaries of level country and beyond the ranges of hills which include descriptive notesas such and heights in feet. Title taken from the card catalogue for this map. The following notes are written on the bottom right corner:- Most of the settlers lived at Matawhero and Makaraka. The former was the principal scene of the Whakato is where we used to live up to 1856 Waerengahika is where we had our schools Waikahua is the site of my present cottage Te Karetu is the scene of two engagements with the Hauhaus on Nov. 23 & Dec. 2 Ngatapa is the scene of the last fight Jan. 4 & 5 At the settlement of Whareongaonga the note states: The Chatham Island prisoners landed here July 10. 1868. Description: A photograph of a rough tracing of a sketch map, copied in 1841, of an enlarged navigational chart of the Hau Ridi harbour entrance, now known as Napier, and the Hawke Bay, which is the larger of the two maps. Details on the enlarged map include soundings and descriptions of shingle, low water areas, Martha Reef with references to the sinking of the Brig, Martha, and channels for boats going towards You Poo [sic], i.e. Taupo, and Wai Tute Hari {sic], now known as Tutaekuri River and a sketch of a Maori settlement belonging to Ngati Te Whatuiapiti. The second map is of the coast from Hau Ridi to the area north of Tolaga Bay, and includes named islands, Young Nick's Head, Poverty Bay, and various features along the coast. Description: A collection of map information from various sources from 1858-1892. The maps no. 1-6 and 8 contain information from Native Land Court plans of the 1880's, Survey Office road plans, Lands and Survey's first amendment (Mr Cussen's topographical survey), a map by S. Percy Smith, and the Sub-Atlas committee. The information has been added in different pens and hand writing eg "Plan marked from Hokianga" or "no track here shown by Mr Cussen". The map marked no. 7 shows military information from the New Zealand wars eg "Troops to be sent to Waikaremoana via Ahikereru - Ruatahuna Huiarau from Taupo". Shows some native tracks eg "from Heruiwi" and corrections or previous omissions. Map no. 9 shows tracks on N.L.C. plans, one of which "is away at the Court". The maps show very little signs of any settlement, except No. 3 and 6 "Tapuaeharuru Pa" and "Te Pueto Stn". A mission station, a native settlement and a school are also indicated. The maps cover the region from Hokianga, Kawhia Harbour, Mokau River, Waikato River, Tirau, Taupo to Rotorua on maps 1-6, 8 and Rotorua to Waikaremoana to Poverty Bay on maps 7 and [9]. All maps depict rivers. Map 7 and [9] are maps with annotations. They are on the published base map "Four-mile sheet, No. 10" (Wellington, New Zealand Lands and Surveys, 1935). Description: Military map of the area from Tauranga Harbour to the East Cape and south to Whangawehi Stream, across to Lake Rotoaira. Lakes, rivers, streams, bays, islands and harbours are drawn, some of which are named. Includes hachures. A mission house is marked near Gisborne. Blockhouses, redoubts, engagements, Maori pas, kaingas and confiscation boundaries as gazetted are referred to in a key. A second key is given for marked routes and campaigns of Te Arawa and Ngatiporou. Campaigns against Te Kooti include names of commanding officers, places and dates of battles. Names include Colonel Whitmore, Mair and Preece, Hamlin and Witty, Lambert, Deighton and Herrick. Te Kooti's routes are marked. Description: Plots the Hauhau campaign and Te Kooti campaign from the New Zealand Wars. Shows central North Island and note reads "Land enclosed by yellow is that of the Maori King, boarded by the 'aukati' no European may cross on pain of death". Military engagements and massacres are identified across the map. Massacres are identified at Matawhero, Ohiwa Harbour, Whitecliffs and Waihi. Engagements are identified at Mohaka, Ngaatape, Puketapu, Turanga and Ahikerera Pa on the East Coast and Whakatane districts, and Rauparoa Pa, Otatau, Otoia, Wairou, Moturoa, Ruapuru and Te Ngutu o te Mana (identified as Tito Kowaru's own place).
